Subject: How did I screw grayscale up?

As you can see, my grayscale documents have acquired an ugly greenish-blue cast compared to rgb documents. Both docs in this pix are filled with 50% gray. In the grayscale document, when I set the gray value in the Color Picker it looks right, but when I close the color picker the foreground color swatch in the Tools window turns ugly. I don't know how I did this - can someone tell me how to fix it? This PS 7.01. It's gotta be somethin' in PS 'cause grayscale docs look fine in Painter. I already tried re-installing PS, BTW. - Bill
