Don't know if it's old news, but I've just got yet another virus-email from "support@microsoft.com" Naturally this e-mail is not from Microsoft (at least I don't think so *G*) but it contains a virus nontherless. The virus is the W32.Palyh.worm My virusscanner picked it up both times but some may not be as lucky, so BEWARE! I got one of those myself last week. The company I work for sent an email warning of that particular virus.... I haven'[t seen much chatter about it otherwise..thanks for the reminder and warning :)

I've had a couple of these; the HTML message containing the attachment even came with a Microsoft-ish blue colour scheme. As you say, it's easy to detect. NAV lit up like a Christmas-tree when it spotted it. Different name, though; identified as W32.Gibe.B@mm.

I had almost a dozen of those last week with numerous subject lines...I tried forwarding it to abuse at Microsoft and it was rejected.....shouldn't they know peeps are using their email to send them out...

My virus checker did not find it...guess I should get a different one :)

The source/return address is pretty much irrelevant - you can set up any address you like and just change the outgoing mail server to the one you use to send it (I have two ISP addresses on my OE identity, but use a third company's server to actually send). I think the header can tell you where it really came from, but it's an effort.

I got it about 8 times last week. NAV running current defs stopped it.

I got two last week. One to my work account, and one to home. My work automatically stripped the attachment. I'm using yahoo for my home email. The attachment was intact but yahoo gives me the option to download the attachment without scanning for viruses. Just wanted to mention this because you can still get infected if you bypass the scanning software. Don't do it! Always scan, even if the email says it comes from your mother. I get 1-2 emails a month from myself. When I expand the routing header it's actually from brumar@jps.net. B Rumar was contacted by earthlink cleaned his computer and even closed his account. I'm still getting emails supposedly from him. I can follow these back as far as ohio. The KLEZ virus software has encorporated both our emails into the virus engine to spread. I gave up on ever stopping it and set up a filter that just dumps these in the trash when I get them. Viruses can be very sophisticated. This new worm has it's own email engine and can spread through shared computers over a network. It does not use your outlook, eudora mail to send itself to other computers. It will read your address files ar html pages on your computer to find addresses.

Man, I've gotten that thing at least 20 times already. Also the one pretending to be Paypal. I've been getting tons of .scr and .pif files lately too and Norton hasn't caught all of them (and I'm up to date with my definitions). It seems like twice a day I have to empty Eudora's attachment folder.

I got the PayPal a couple of times in one week and I fowarded them to Paypal and they wrote me back & said they appreciated me sending it to them...:>) I haven't gotten any more since then but I'm sure that's a coincidence...

Oh there's a Paypal one around too? Haven't seen that one yet :o( Same worm? Gawd I HATE Virusses.. Was stupid enough to actually execute ILOVEYOU back when it started. It killed ALL my pictures :o( Thank God it was on my PC at work so most of my files were safe at home... but still... Taught me to take virusses seriously :o(
