I was trying to remap the obj files from the poser 4 cd so I could save them as props, but no matter what I do, and I've tried everything I could think of...They always revert back to their origional map which isnt really a map at all, just a jumble of lines...I've remapped objs before with no problem at all, so I cant for the life of me figure out what the problem is...any ideas?...

heyas; open them in uvmapper, change the map, then save the obj. saving the obj is the key. :) the other key is, if there is an rsr file associated with the geometry, delete it. (it will be in the obj's geometries folder, with the same name as the obj.)

Dmentia I presume you are using the latest version of Steve Cox's UV mapper. Poser objects come with inherant UV mapping. E.g. the poser P4 Female nude has a particular version of planer mapping inherant in it (an unwrapped version that loads up in UV mapper when you load the model object). If you want to change the mapping type (after loading up the obj) select "new UV map" under the EDIT MENU in UV Mapper and choose what you want. However, if you want to apply this new map to the object you must save both the new model and map (under FILE MENU in UV Mapper), if you just save just the map you will get distorted mapping or none at all on the original model, which still reverts to its inherant mapping type and UV co-ordinates. Very Important: Do not overwrite your original model by saving the new model with the same name as the original. Save both the new model and new map under a new name. The above is just an intro to the subject. There are lots of more advanced things that one can do in UV Mapper such as different mapping types on the same object and all on the same map and much more, but I hope what is here answers your question. Ooops bloodsong! Guess we were typing at the same time! STORM

While you are here bloodsong... Have you ever found a way - in UV Mapper - to recreate the unwrapped UV mapping that comes with the Zygote Poser models, i.e. the inherant planer type that loads up in UV Mapper. I have been playing around with a few ideas such as selecting portions of the mesh in UV mapper, moving them and rescaling selectivly to try and recreate the effect but it is real slow and tedious. Any ideas? STORM

I've done them before, and I have resaved the objs...thats why I'm so confused...these are the first obj's I've ever had trouble with...the ones that come stock on the Poser 4 Content CD...obj files...bench, candle, coffee mug etc...they are such simple objs, it should be easy...I'm using the latest version I think, and I have made really detailed maps of much tuffer objs, its just for some reason when I save these obj files over the old ones, it doesnt take...when I reopen them after saving, they are back to thier origional jumble of messed up lines...its so wierd...has any one else tried to map those particular objs?

Stormrage posted Sat, 10 June 2000 at 6:57 PM

hmmm I wonder.. its a long shot but it might be it.. Have you checked the properties of the obj files to make sure they aren't read only? When i recently moved my files to a new computer I hadn't realized the properties were changed so when I modified an obj it wouldn't save the changes. Just wondering Storm

Saving over the original might be the problem as bloodsong suggested the rsr file might be the culprit. Try saving the re-mapped object as Candle2 etc. Then IMPORT it into Poser (FILE MENU, import Wavefront OBJ), do any scaling you have to and save it to the library. You will have a second instance of the candle etc but this should work and the new mapping should apply, also look at what Stormrage suggested. STORM

There is something strange about those models, I wanted to use the chair (which is a wooden chair anyway, not the office chair that shows up in the documentation), I opened the .obj in Poser and it came in all faceted, like a 3DMF file comes in. I took it in Max to try and smooth it, it wouldn't smooth - then I noticed there were 15,000+ vertices! I did a low-setting weld and that dropped to about 3,000, and then it would smooth. There is something really strange about those models, though.

Storm, I've been looking at the docs for the Beta version of Flesh for NT. Zygote uses the SGI version to make the maps. Flesh has a really nice set of unwrapping tools, which is undoubtedly why Zygote uses it for this. It's not cheap however,(Ok, it's rather pricey, at least the SGI version is) but it looks very nice for doing 3D texture maps.

Thank you Kevin. I do not know the program "Flesh" but I am very interested in it. Do you by any chance have a web link for them? Do you know if they make a Win 9x version? John

Kevin posted Sun, 11 June 2000 at 3:14 PM

www.dnasoft.com www.dnasoft.com/products/flesh/index.html They are at the start of the beta for NT, though they are doing it as an X-windows port, and supplying an Xserver with it. I don't think it will port well to 9x, as most UNIX programs depends on multiple running processes, which 9x doesn't do worth a damn. Ever try to format a floppy while doing anything else? NT does it fine, 9x basically dies until the format is done. The X-windows port is not the usual technique, though it has serious potential. This should make it easy to port to Linux and such, with matches well with the plans SGI seems to have. You can write to them and ask for info on the schedule and such.

I finally dug out my Poser Content CD. Full marks Stormrage, when copied over to my HD the files were "Read Only." Anyway I loaded up the chair and the cofeecup in UV mapper, remapped them in box and planer type, saved the models as Chair2 and Coffecup2 and imported them into Poser. They work fine and the objects retain their new UV mapping. No problems with faceting either. I hope this works for you Dmentia. John

Jim Burton posted Sun, 11 June 2000 at 11:20 PM

John- I also dug out my CD again, mine has a Chair.obj dated 1/15/97 in "long file names", on closer inspection there are actually 6 chairs there, all stacked on top of each other, that is to say Max indicates what should be a single vertice is actually 6 (some were 5, most 6). I'm sure that is why Poser faceted it. On the other hand, the map was O.K. in UV Mapper, but I didn't try saving it. I wonder how Poser and UV Mapper handle things like this - when you map it does the mapping effect all 6 copies? I have no idea.

STORM3 posted Mon, 12 June 2000 at 4:06 AM

Wow Jim, it is obviously messed up on your content CD, BTW I wasn't implying you were wrong. Here are my CD details for the chair. ...OBJ PropsAssorted Objects... 15 June, 1999 12.32.02 75.9KB (77,763 bytes) The Chair in question follows the Bench and Candlestick. Clearly yours is an earlier edition which was probably fixed by Metacreations afterwards for my release. Mmmmm. Makes one wonder what other unfixed problems exist on the earlier CD releases and how they might continue to be the cause of questions and confusion. John

storm: nope, i have NO idea how to get those zygote-style un-wrapped maps. wish i did. :)

STORM3 posted Mon, 12 June 2000 at 7:29 PM

Thanks bloodsong. This is very tentative, but I think I may have come up with a way to do a similar type of unwrapped mapping in UV mapper but the method is really tedious and slow. I have been messing with the thing for so long now I go to sleep still trying to work out how in my head. Anyway the idea is still in its infancy and I am just experimenting but if I get anywhere I will let you all know. John

heya; do you go into vertex mode and move the vertices instead of the polygons? (and i HATE tedious! :) )
