Thanks so much! Going through the book and got to the part where they talk about these so I needed some to play with. Marque

Do I have to have linux to use gzip? Says I can download them without the compression but it's not working. Any tips? Thanks, Marque

You can use the freebie 'WinRAR' to unzip the .gz files (short for gzip).

http://www.rarlab.com/

Once you have the file uncompressed, you'll need to change the picture's extention from '' (blank) to .dem, so that Vue can recognize it.

A quick search on Google for '.dem file' turned up this link page. I haven't verified any of the links, but there are some world references and a Mars reference. Charles

Attached Link: FreeWare MicroDem

Go to url DL and install microdem and sundry database installers (PC Only) Open MicroDem > Click on "world icon" (vector map)at top. if it is not displayed on the tool bar goto options > vector map click high res radio button, apply and close. Window comes up showing world map. Select subset and zoom tool and lasoo area of interest. Smaller map comes up at this point. Right click on the area of interest and various types of data sets can be requested. You will need to be online for this part. I don't have them all so I will typically go to JPL (Jet Propulsion Lab)data sets which will give you a million different options for the type of data. You are now at JPL online data base. Max res is .33 arc seconds which is pretty good but not great. Select color elevation(seems to be better in Vue than grayscale)and save image for applying to terrains. You can change all sorts of parameters at JPL such as image size, ortho-rectified, boundry overlays yada yada. Max size seems to be about 6,000 x 6,000 or so. If done properly by making your terrains and all images acquired perfectly square, you can also map the Land Sat images on top of the terrains in Vue although this is a little convoluted and confusing due to shortcomings in Vue's texture mapping tools. Please see MightyPete's tut about this issue at http://petes-oasis.com/hummingbird.html All in all, MicroDem is a must have for this sort of stuff as is 3Dem, another handy tool for sat data sets. I don't have a lot of time to go into more detail but I owe this group and others out for their help they've given me. This should give you a good start though.
