I just got a message from a vendor here through my Renderosity email that was tagged as follows: This mail is probably spam. The original message has been attached along with this report, so you can recognize or block similar unwanted mail in future. See http://spamassassin.org/tag/ for more details. Why would the email service you provide want to label information from vendors as spam??? That seems to be most unfriendly (and unfair to the merchants). This had to do with an upgrade to a product I had purchased from the vendor and certainly is not what I would consider spam. I understand it was labeled spam because it was mailed to multiple people. Still and all, doesn't it seem a little counterproductive to have the email service you provide label Renderosity merchants as spamsters when all they are trying to do is provide an update to their product? Just mentioning it for what it is worth (which is probably nothing).

Because of the subject lable of "This is probably spam," I nearly deleted the message without reading it. But then I thought a spamster probably would not label their message "This is probably spam" since that would not result in a desirable outcome. But it is sort of funny.

Definitely not nothing dialyn :) I'll point Tim to this thread as he's looking after the email, but from what little I know the spam filtering works on a set of heuristics, looking for certain words and phrases which are common in spam email and an upgrade offer probably contained those words and phrases. If you need a copy of the email, let me know. I didn't see anything that struck me as overtly spamstish about the message but that's probably because I actually wanted the information it provided.

The mail servers use some kind of authomatic software, but how a machine can guess if the mail is a spam?, it tries to do it, sometime hit and sometime doesn't. Today I've received an email from a friend that was classified as a spam!

As the keeper of the SPAM filter, guess I should chime in here. The software doesn't discriminate. It comes with a set of weighted criteria that potentially identify SPAM. The only way we can influence that is to raise or lower the various weights. As you can see, it was mostly concerned about a yahoo email address not being sent from Yahoo. I toned down the weight on that and we'll see what happens. Tim
