when I try to apply a MAT to a white figure, I get a window pop up saying it is looking for the texture. I cancel it and sometimes the mat will work. Sometimes the same window pops back up..and eventually poser just freezes. Just spent some big bucks at daz for the v3 clone and had a lot of problems with the mats. Is this a bug?....have re installed poser a couple times....always have the same problem.

Is it asking for a texture or for a BUM? Poser 4 or 5?

dpoosch posted Thu, 12 June 2003 at 10:08 AM

it is asking for a texture....the box pops up with the texture it is asking for right there...and if I click on the texture to apply...the box comes right back. It is like it does not recognize something in the MAT that makes it apply. If I cancel the pop up..sometimes it will go ahead and apply the mat...

oh...and I didn't mention it...I am using poser 4

That usually happens when it wants you to look for a bump map. It shows the file because it is probably a .jpg and needs converting to a bum. (do this in poser and not by renaming the file with a .bum extension) Correct me if I am wrong but does the following happen? If you cancel once it will ask if you want to continue looking, choose no it will then ask again for the file choose cancel and no. It then loads the MAT.

Might be useful if you could provide a screen capture of the message.

I get the popups that ask for textures only when the texture files are not in the ...poserruntimetextures folder but elsewhere on my HD. Which language is your Poser? When it is any other language than english, the DAZ installations put some files in wrong folders. You have then to put the files manually in the right folders.

I've had that a few times recently - it asks for a texture (not a bump) with the file browser open to the folder that contains the texture, which as far as I can see is correctly named.

It sounds to me like the MAT is pointing to the wrong path for the texture. I sugest you open the MAT file in a text editor and check the texture reference. Then edit the texture reference to point to the true location of the texture. If the texture is in the ".RuntimeTextures" folder or one of its sub-folders, then you only need the file name in the reference, not the full path. Fore example, using the reference: textureMap ":MyTexture.jpg" This would find MyTexture.jpg anywhere in or under the Textures folder.

Poser will ask for the texture for every instance it's called for in the MAT or whatever. If you show it once, you have to say okay to all the times it asks you. I've had it ask me as many as 20 times. If you show it the texture you want and THEN cancel the next time it asks, it will take forever to come out of it and you'll think Poser has locked up. It hasn't.

With CR2s Poser seems to go through two cycles of asking for each material, and has to be cancelled twice if neccessary, PZ2s seem to vary.

Thanks to all for the information...at least now I know I am not doing something wrong. It is just the way the program works. I think the MATS are still better than going thru all the loading of textures..especially for V3. I just thought a MAT showuld just load the texture and I could be on my merry way. And I know now I have not frozen up when it repeatedly asks for a texture I can see is there. Many thanks to all of you for answereing.

This is NOT normal behavior in my experience. If the texture references are correct in the MAT file, and the texture graphics are in the correct location in the directory structure, there should be no dialogue boxes to deal with. I have made quite a few MAT pose files in my time, and have never had a dialogue box pop up for any of them, they just load the texture, bum, tranns map, and what ever. If you have a box poping up somthing is wrong. The most likely causes of problems are: Image files not located in the proper path. Incorrect image references in the MAT file. JPEG for bump map is not converted to BUM format.

Right, Les. If the references are correct this wont happen. But it's good to know how Poser behaves when it happens. I've run Correct Reference on my whole libraries several times, and run it on newstuff before I move it into the libraries. Yet, every once in a while something gets through because I forget, or rename a pz2 to hd2 (where I keep clothing textures) before running CR which ignores hd2 files.
