I am decent at modeling organic objects but I need to model a prop that looks like a Pocketwatch, it has some flat edges, few curves, and some bevels.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Could you post a picture of what you're trying to make? You might start with a sphere and flatten it but it depends exactly what you're trying to achieve. - Baz

depends on the program, and what you have available. I'd agree with BazC, but what you can do depends on what you're working with..

I made a simple pocket watch with Wings after reading this in about 30 min. It's not anything to brag about, and I did not take careful notes while working it out. In general the process was to use a cylinder, scale it down in Y, inset new faces in the top and bottom, move them out normal, add a new loop around the middle, loop cut the model in half, rotate the top up, inset new faces on the inside, extrude normal into the two halves, cut in some edges on the bottom edge, bevel that point into a poly, extrude up the stem, extrude out the hands, and bridge the two halves together to form the hinge. I assigned faces materials and gave it a quick OpenGL render. As I said, nothing to brag about, but with a little more time and attention to detail you should be able to get a decent watch in a similar manner. jon

Thanks, wow that sample was fast, I have no problem with People, creatures, or some props, but something that has to be exact dimensions is difficult for me. I think I will test out Wings and see if I can do it through that software. I need to make the Watch to exact dimensions because it will be made into a cad file for steriolithography. then it will be modeled out of metal. Dwmdesigner

In that case Wings probably is not for you. If you are going to bend metal, you need a percise app, probably a nurbs based package. I have not used it, but I'd suggest you check out Rhino. I love Wings, but that is not what it is meant for. jon

I can't afford to buy some really expensive software at the moment, I may just have the Prototype laser scanned to get the 3D Model details in CAD.

What about Anim8or? Would that work? Dwmdesigner

I don't think Anim8or would be any better for such a task than Wings is (and of the two, I'd use Wings). I think Amapi is a nurbs modeler, but I don't know if it supports the level of precision you would need. Perhaps an Amapi pro could chime in. If it would work there is/was a free version. But I no longer know where to find it. If you are going to press metal for this project it sounds more like it is work related than hobby related. I guess I'm just surprised that what you want to do and the price of Rhino don't intersect. jon
