This was just a test render... it really pushes the amount of metaballs that bryce can handle... It's supposed to simulate a rather large drop of water first hitting the surface of some pond water. There are 15,000 metaballs in this image... a simulated 450,000 polygons, appr 300 megs of active ram are used in this image. Took 25 minutes to render. Sorry, I am just a big softy when it comes to metaballs...no pun intended.

That...is absolutely...absurd... Looks amazing, unfortunately, my computer would explode and/or spontaneously combust if i created such an image.

The entire base is made up of metaballs too so that the entire effect would be blended seamlessly. I first made the base by just multireplicating an array of metaballs to make a solid rectangular object. I added some disturbance with the randomizer tool. Then I moved metaballs around in the center untill the desired effect was achieved. (obviously not all by hand.) The pond is more of a puddle, therefore I felt it would not geyser (as it would probably in a pond.)

I think my comp was actually bartering with me when I started multireplicating, Windows messenger was popping up "Please don't do it" "Think of my RAM" "What would jesus do!?"

wow, strong computer you got there... i did a study on water yesterday, espcially the splash thingee... i used terrain instead... and tried to atweak it.. it actually came out fine... well i really dunn maybe i could put a WIP or two

Ornlu posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 8:22 PM

Yeah, I've tried with terrains before. You mean the pond rings? because I agree that works better with terrain. however, you don't get the sense of volume, that you get with metaballs.

thats insane, even if I was good a metaballs, i wouldnt be able to get it to look like an actual water splash. will you be using this in an image?

EYECON posted Wed, 09 July 2003 at 9:32 PM

orlu...no what i meant was the water splash itself... ill try to put up a WIP to let you guys see... though its not as good as what you have there with metabalss at least it not as heavy too

Wood, I probably won't be... I'll save it as usual, but I was just playing around, modeling with metaballs. I find fluids fascinating, really challenging to model, but oh so fun...

15,000 meta balls! most objects i ever had b4 my machine bombed was 10,000 bog-standard spheres! and then it died a death worth of a celeron 333. it had done its best. actually i've upgraded since i fiddled with that picture... added 64meg more ram.... hmmmm... "and the light went out in his eyes for the very last time, ever." a slight misquote but it'll do! John

This is ever so cool Ornlu. I need to do some metaballing... Have never done a whole lot with the metaballs. ~ Swade ~ 8)
