Subject: Poser 4 and networks

We've just bought a laptop, and the intention is to add an ethernet card to this PC and network it with the laptop for printing/net access/file co-ordination. Now, I know that if Poser runs when on a network it checks to make sure that the same copy isn't running on another linked machine, but what happens when the laptop has gone walkies to a conference or on holiday: does Poser shrug its little shoulders and run anyway, or does it scream and refuse to run until the other machine is connected and checked? I seem to remember some posts suggesting the latter behaviour. I had been hoping we could manage with a lap-link type affair, just for file copying, but the laptop lacks a parallel port and the USB alternative looks relatively pricey compared to network card and cable (and given the number of dead links Google turned up I'm not sure how available such things are, anyway).

Basically Poser just shrug it's little shoulders and run away L No seriously, when no network is found, Poser just stops looking :o) I have Poser 5 on my laptop and it doesn't care if I'm connected to our local network here at home or not. That is if I'm not connected then everything is fine with Poser.

if you use Zone Alarm(or any firewall I guess) dont give Poser access and it should work on both machines...

however if you have it on the network, I've heard it will hammer your connection for quite a while..so if it 'has the slows', this is a likely culprit.

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

Thanks - I had visions of being Poser-less for weeks at a time if it was bolshy. I wasn't sure how the firewall would work - whether it comes between my PC and everything else, or only between my PC and the internet. I'm not planning multiple installations of Poser, and there isn't desk space for having the laptop connected more than needed (and we don't want to cable the whole house), so it sounds as if all should be well.
