Hello,

PoseRay 3.0.1 is now available.
This is the largest update to PoseRay. Many features added and numerous bugs fixed. Some of the new features include 3DS and DXF import, interactive light setup, property mapping for materials, scene primitives as placeholders, camera presets and built-in help.

You can download it from
http://user.txcyber.com/~sgalls/index.htm

You can take a look at the manual (included with the above file) at
http://user.txcyber.com/~sgalls/poserayhelp.htm

You can get a list of changes from
http://user.txcyber.com/~sgalls/poserayhelp.htm#Version_History

later,

Great News. The only reason I use Pov-Ray is because of PoseRay. Thank-you.

Outstanding! This will make POVRay an even better option for Poser users. I wish there was an something like this for all the Renderman renderers out there. Thank you.

lmckenzie - I am working on a RenderMan/RIB exporter for Poser 5, and it's progressing nicely. Until then, Poser ships with built-in basic RIB export.

This may be stupid question, but why would you use this? Sharen

Use what - PoseRay?

FyreSpiryt ( ) posted Mon, 28 July 2003 at 6:26 AM

Ray-tracing capability, for free. Great for some of the effects Poser just can't do, like glass with refraction and caustics. I actually started my 3D hobby with POV-Ray, so one of these days I'm going to take the time to do a scene with PoseRay, just to go full circle.

Caustics come from photon mapping, not ray tracing.

Thanks FlyerX, much appreciated.

I will have to go get this, this sounds so interesting. Sharen

I'm sorry, Stewer, you're right. POV-Ray couldn't do true caustics last time I played with it. But I think it was able to do simulated ones. Or maybe I'm smoking crack. It does do refraction, though. I know because it screwed with me for days on an animation before I realized I was passing through a glass.

Your project sounds interesting, Stewer. I only have Poser 4 and no immediate plans to get Poser 5. I've played with BMRT using P4's RIB export. Any tools that make the capabilities of these applications more accessible are welcome. For what it does, the much maligned Poser 4 renderer actually does a decent job with human figures. It's nice to be able to use reflections, etc, that P4 doesn't address without more financial investment.

If you're using P4's RIB export with BMRT, you need to do a search/replace to replace all the characters with . BMRT is expecting texture paths in C-style strings, where most other renderers I've seen use a single backslash in paths on Windows. However, my exporter won't help you much as it's written in Python and using some of Poser 5's methods, so it wouldn't even run on ProPack without modification. But the good part is that I can already export full animations to a series or RIB files that are being rendered in the background - great for animation previews!

Yeah, I think BMRT is reflecting UNIX origins. I'm sure the animators will appreciate your work.
