A matter of interest.
What do you call most of us artists that contribute to this site.

We compose images using a computer as the primary tool, utilising models, meshes, skins, textures, atmospheres, lighting arrangements and fractel generating components/products. We act as directors setting a scene, creating the mood, placing actors/models and scenary, setting lights and textures and then taking a snapshot/animation.

If I say just some of those words above to most people I know, I get blank stares. They haven't a clue what I mean when I say something like... "I just construct a mesh, manipulate it in 3D, and then apply a skin with a good Photoshop texture, chuck in a couple of lights, adjust an atmosphere and then render it". I get replies like: "Oh, I know Photoshop".

Some thoughts:
Graphic Artist - too generic
Renderer - This is actually a job of applying cement to the outside of a house
Modeller - too specific
Vue Artist - application specific
Virtual Director - ???
3d Animator - implies movement
3d Artist - maybe?

Any more thoughts on this one.

To find more on "this one", just consult the "Rosity Graphic Dictionary" in our Backroom. LOL

oh! Look at that, what a co-incident! I know photoshop too! :-) Ok Scott, 'maybe' sound like a better answer - 3d artist. Perhaps, 3d grapics artis? Computer Graphics Artists? The bottom line for me, as long as I'm having fun with this, name really not important. :-)

In France we call it : Infographiste

Well, infographiste sounds to me much too much like the good old days of business charts, nowadays done in Excel. In my early days, doing computer animation we called us "animation designers". Here i would think "3D Designer" would probably match mostly to me - beside my day to day business as a graphic designer.

One day your ship comes in - but you're at the airport.

Artist, director, animator, modeler what a 'heavy' words... and I thought that it was just a hobby for most of us

I think 3D Artist fits. I'm an artist who happens to work in 3D.
