Check out Runtime DNA... I think there might be something in their Real Deals section, as well as the main store.

Hangman's Tree, by JesterCGI, here in the Marketplace. Only $5, and practically a "dead" ringer for your image.

caleb68 ( ) posted Wed, 06 August 2003 at 11:09 AM

yeah i have the hangman tree, problem is the mapping on it, not done very good, need to be able to make it look like a real tree.

There's "tree of old" by stonemason that might work for you, in the MarketPlace, but he also did a freebie version, if it's still up. And the texture is very good, IMHO, but I only have the free version, not the whole thing. :)

This link is to free model list from the "Backroom" in the Vue d'Esprit forum. I've seen several dead trees(similar to your pic) in 3ds format...many were made with XFrog, and are of very high quality. ...lot of tree and bark textures also... SWAMP

If you have some bark textures in mind, I can probably do you a nice dead tree. Been planning on putting one up in the freebies section....but can't get my lazy @#$ out to the yard to get a picture of some bark (I know, lame excuse)

Well, here is a 15 minute stab using your picture as a reference. With some sleep (been up for almost 24 hrs straight) and a little more time, I can probably get you something similar.

Let me know if you are interested (and if you have a bark) The one currently on there is not mine, so I couldn't distrubute it.

Well, I made few changes, it looks a little better now....I really have to go to bed:) Again, bark is just thrown on there...I could even do some shaggy bark with a nice enough transparentable texture

G'night,

eric

ooo :D looks great :D hey if you add the two larger tree branches to it (like in the picture) this would be a exact match for what I need :D besides the bottome of the tree mapping being a little stretched it looks awesome :) If ya make it look like the one in the picture i'll even swap ya something from my store :)

OK, it's getting better. Only had a half hour or so to spend on it, thanks to the old water leaking from bathtub into neighboring closet for weeks unseen trick.....ugh. What a mess!

Here is the current incarnation. You'll notice the textures look MUCH better! The textures on this render are from one of the RDNA old wood textures. Again, I can't distribute those files, however, I can make the material names compatible, and thus the MAT files from the packages made by the folks at RDNA would work....

And one more with a different texture from the OW package. They have some expansions which were 2.50. I'll have to figure out which ones came in the 2.50, but user's of this little guy could get by cheaply enough with one of those...

As you'll notice from the other picture, the tiny branches get anti-aliased out....but they look nice when you get close up...This mesh is 4.5 Megs, is that too big?

OK, tested out the MAT compatibility with RDNAs Old Wood stuff, and it works fine. My favorite mats came from some of the full versions I bought, but there were a couple from the OW expansion 1 pack that looked pretty nice. The desolation pack also has a burnt out looking bark, but it shows patterns too clearly in the when textured on this guy....drat! Technically, any bark texture that is seamless will work, as long as it isn't too different proportion-wise....I can always rescale the mapping, but I would need an example to work with. Let me know if you would like a copy (and can handle a 2meg zip file) If it is too big, I can chop it down using some optimization settings, however, that risks losing some of the detail in the branches and possibly some of the rounded shape of the trunk...I can also try and reduce the number of branches though what you see above is my favorite so far...it might not look quite as nice with any fewer.... IM me with your email if you want a copy of the file. When you are happy with it, I'll see about making it available under freestuff. eric

Wow! I wonder how many owls I could fit on that! One magnificent dead tree!

A_ ( ) posted Fri, 08 August 2003 at 3:16 AM

Yes, it really is very pretty. Simply wonderful tree. :)

Hi peggy, this is an xfrog tree (from scratch, though). It is a really nice program, though it requires a different approach to building stuff than other 3d programs (basically you are manipulating mathmatical functions). For those interested in giving this little guy a test run, I'll post a link to this thread tonight. I thought I uploaded the most recent version, but it apparently created a single file of 0 length (it was a real fast download, though:) I don't have access to it here, so it will be after 6:00 before I can get 'im uploaded. eric

Peggy_Walters ( ) posted Fri, 08 August 2003 at 11:38 AM

I have XFrog, but have not really used it that much. Math is not one of my strong points! Thinking of upgrading to version 4 since it is a plugin to Cinnema4D. Saw the demo at Siggraph - it looked very cool. Looking forward to seeing the file! Peggy

OK, I actually got the whole file this time:) You wouldn't think I was actually a programmer since I can't even ftp a freakin file all the way...oh well, some days are better than others.

Anyone who wants to give this one a go should be able to use the link to get the file. Just unzip it someplace in one of your characters folder.

I get a hostname lookup failure. I've tried at various times. Is the link right? Or maybe I can't get there from here...happens sometimes.

mamba-negra ( ) posted Fri, 08 August 2003 at 11:06 PM

Hm, I had this problem with my little plant I made a few weeks back. I guess the DNS issue never got resolved. Anyone know of someone who might be able to host it? eric Spit, IM me your email address, if you want me to send it to you. It's about 575K in size, if that isn't too large.

Spit ( ) posted Fri, 08 August 2003 at 11:42 PM

Thanks! IM on the way!
