Ok, how should I save these mat things? Im all confused, lol.

electroglyph posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 7:13 PM

Thanks much. Lots of great materials to use. Just one question AgentSmith. How come my materials look so much better when you render them? :)

Zhann posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 7:23 PM

Sparr, bring up and object, say a sphere, go to the Mat Lab, select the mats you created, clic on one, shift, clic on last one to highlight them all, select 'export' from the bottom, save them under your name, (this way all the mats will be in one .mat file, and all will install at once), zip it up, and mail it off to Agent Smith.... If they are scattered in the mat lab, use 'crntl' and select each one, then export....is this correct guys?

Here is a small pic tutorial on how to export .mat's Do not just drag it out of your folder in windows explorer, export it out like the picture at the link shows. I had some problems with dragged out mats. AgentSmith

I tried to drag Adamites X-ray mats into a folder. I had one picture sphere with 5 names next to it. Clicking on each name made the one picture sphere change color to match the appropriate name. I threw them out and imported them and vola, 5 pictures each with its own name.

Sparr posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 8:42 PM

I sent mine off, I can only hope you'll get them, lol. By the way, whats an average file size for these things?

Sparr posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 8:43 PM

Hm, Im getting the feeling I did this challenge wrong, lol.

AgentSmith posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 9:04 PM

Anywhere from...150Kb to 2Mb, unzipped.

AgentSmith posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 9:11 PM

The problem I had was this, let's see if I can explain this well; Let's say you're looking at your "Metals" material catagory, and there are 30 mats in there, if you were to select them all, and delete them, you wouldn't see them anymore, BUT the size of the actual file that holds/is your Metal Materials ("Metals.mat"), DOESN'T reduce in size. The old materials are still there, you just can't see them. So, now you add your 5 or so materials from your July Challenge into that catagory. And, instead of exporting, you send me the file from that folder, it could turn out to be 3Mb-4Mb, instaed of 300Kb-400Kb. hope that makes any sense. AgentSmith

Mine was around 2mb, but I think thats because I used pictures as bumpmaps. So did you get my materials ok AgentSmith?

MadDog31 posted Thu, 14 August 2003 at 10:46 PM

I'll get my mats to you AS as soon as I can. I'm running into a lot of projects right now and haven't had much time to get the small things shored up. I'll keep you posted. MD

I read a tut on how to really delete the mats, not just the pics from the window display, I think you need to physically remove them from the preset folder. Say you delete all the pics in your Metal Mats, then you have to go into the preset folder and remove the mats there as well...I'll look it up...

Brendan, I hadn't thought about the uploaded mats as being prizes for everyone, but that's a great way to look at it, everybody gets a prize! or two or three or four.......

Great--thanks for all your work AgentSmith! And thanks to everyone who shared their mats.

I bought three CDs and one DVD yesterday, alas the instant gratification meter hardly registerd the action. Today I am as pleased as can be with the goodies I have just downloaded. It must be the sharing thang as apposed to the solitary displacement activity! Thanks to all!

I uploaded the models of my entry to my website and they come textured with the DTE textures. I posted a message about that after the challenge. (If you wish, I send them to you, but where do I send them to?)Thanks to everybody else for their mats!

My gallery @ Renderosity

AgentSmith posted Fri, 15 August 2003 at 5:06 PM

Yup, send them to me! (catlin, Creations, anyone else) agentsmith@renderosity.com Zhann, you are right, to clean out your materials catagories, you export out what you want to keep, then delete everything out of there, by manually doing it through windows explorer. Then re-import your mats. This will get rid of any "hidden" mats. AgentSmith

Woohhooo, all these mats, I feel guilty I didn't have time for the challenge and have therefore supplied no mats :-( Is this going to be up for a while AS? I may create some just to reduce my guilty feelings at grabbing all these mats.

The reason I came in here was to ask that very question. I have a whole load of textures I made in the DTE over the years and had been thinking of putting them up in free stuff but if you are willing to post them here for us AS I'll get them packaged into groups. Cheers Catlin
