Hi, I've been just getting on to exporting obj files from poser recently and I was wondering what the story is with the mtl file that exports with it. I'm thinking that i may as well delete it because i dont have any other rendering programs which it seems like theyd only be used in those other types of programs as opposed to poser. Thanks

That is the .obj file's accompanying material file, which, among other things, tells various 3D applications which textures are applied to the object's materials.

Ahh, so how do you use it? I couldn't find it in the maual, see my Glock thread below:)

you cant use it per say.. your 3d program either does or it doesnt....

Just what onnetz says....applications like Vue and Bryce use it for example like Vue, you have a summary of materials, and if you don't have the .mtl file you can not see what the names are ie. head arms eyes...etc.

You keep the .mtl in the same folder as the .obj. If your application can use .mtl files, it'll read the .mtl automatically when you load or import the .obj.

So, you're telling me I shouldn't delete it Thanks Again

Ok, I'm with you so far but without wanting to sound to stupid, how do I get the texture and bump file to work properly with the .obj? I tried the materials room but I kinda didn't know what I was doing :)

What app are you using? Somebody here will probably know if it supports .MTLs. Also a .mtl only stores solid colors, image textures and surface property values. If there's not any nodes hooked up to a image texture you won't get any in the .MTL. You also have to have the bump channel hooked to a bump image texture for bump maps to be included. P5's "math" textures and displacements are an internal part of Poser and can't be exported. HTH; Dan

Thanks Dan, I just worked out where I was going wrong, the prop I was working on had two seperate parts that needed texture and bump maps to be applied to both. Thanks all for the pointers :)
