I have P5, SR3 PC is P3, 1GHz, 512MB RAM Poser can't seem to cope when I load up M3, apply the standard hi-res MATs, add the Julian hair and then render. It just stops DEAD. Is there a workaround to make this work faster ?

I should clarify further on this.... (1) No special render options are set. (2) I've had "slow" renders before, but they eventually come through - either that or tell me that a texture can't be found or something. This is different - I went away, had a shower, washed the dishes and it was still in it's "hung" state.

hello, i'll try to help. somehow firefly have yet another bug(whata surprise!) but to avoid it...simply render in p4 mode...you will see ,it is suppose to work.if you need an image with the firefly option, render two images.one in p4 mode with the hair, and 1 in firefly mode without the hair.then postwork in you favorite paint program. nef

I had the same problem with the Mihai hair - just wont render in firefly, but works fine in P4 mode... any ideas how to fix the hair to work in firefly?
mathman posted Sat, 13 September 2003 at 12:56 AM
thanks, Neftis Yes that has worked, although I must say it still struggled a bit. I'm really pleased with the final outcome though, it's a real nice hairstyle. I've learnt something as well ... I always thought that P4 was the default renderer, but it wasn't. regards, Andrew

I have had similar problems with Neftis' hair before (Yann hair and Casual style, and now the Julian hair). I am running a 1.3GhZ Pentium, Poser 5 and 256 mb ram. Yann hair will hang up during the "Adding Objects" stage about 1/2 the time. Same with the Casual hair. I have not had a lot of time to play with the Julian hair, but it hangs in about 3/4 of the renders I've tried it in. So, I loaded P5 on my other half's computer, loaded M3 and the hair and clothes. He runs a P3, 1.8 GhZ with 640mb RAM. It took a while, but it did render a file I could not get to work at all on my system. (Actual render time was just under an hour.) The file consisted of M3, the Born to be Wild pants, Julian hair and Hi-Res Universal textures. Firefly render with one shadow mapped and one raytraced light (and one with no shadows at all). What causes this? I have no clue. But I do know that Neftis' hair WILL work with the Firefly render engine, though it takes time and a powerful system. And, dammit, it's worth it. Thankfully, we're networked and I can pose the image on one system, drag the PZ3 file to the other and render there. Hope this helps someone else, Shawn

Well, I guess that means I ought to maybe give it a go on my laptop (which has more power) ....

heheh good shawn!!! :) Hehe i just wanted to add this: please people don't held me responsible for a trouble that should be fix by CL...my hairstyles renders very well in other progs like lightwave and 3dsmax, but for some strange reasons it won't work or barely work in firefly. I am not the firefly programer but I know my hair works fine with other render engines. So for those who ask if I can make a firefly version of those hair, well I can't...ask instead that firefly makers work thier problems out.Like I said, it works fine with other render engines, why not firefly??? Please CL if you read this post, try to pay attention to this detail.I think people would love to use firefly with transmap hi polys as I would love to. anyway, the p4 renderer works just fine for me for now.

Mine froze up when I tried to render the Mihal hair. I saved and tried importing it into vue, it came up saying it couldn't find it. I recently revamped my poser five and have all M3 stuff together. I reinstalled the hair putting it in the regular p5 runtime and it all rendered fine. Doesn't seem to be related to your problem, but if anyone else has multi runtimes.

Oo I hope you didn't get me wrong with that neftis, I love your hair.. and have for some time now. I don't mind going an extra step as a fix if I have to as I think your hair is worth it ;) My question was just asked as I really only have the option to fix the hair, and not firefly from my end hehe :) Ms Outlaw, I'll be sure to try that tomorrow and will post if that was it, thanks for the idea!

I am only using the one Runtime, and I was still having problems ......
randym77 posted Sat, 13 September 2003 at 6:22 AM
I don't think it's anything to do with Neftis' hair, except that the hair is very detailed and therefore large. I suspect the problem is that the Firefly renderer uses a ton of system resources. I have a fairly decent computer - Pentium 2.8 GHz, 1.5 GB RAM, Windows XP - but Firefly simply won't render some images. Things I've found that help: 1. Reduce the size of the rendered image. 2. Eliminate the options you don't need. I.e., texture filtering isn't needed for most images. 3. Reduce the "bucket size." The render will be slower, but IME is more likely to complete. 4. Increase the shading rate. 5. Reduce the pixel sampling. 6. Render in draft mode.

Boy am I glad you posted this! I was playing around with M3 last night and had a "hang" with the Yann hair....thought it was lights, but it would seem changing to the P4 renderer is what I need to do! We'll give it a whirl and see what happens :)

Thanks for the help Neftis ! I was pulling your hair out trying to get the julian hair to work ! hehe ! The hair looks great !
mathman posted Sat, 13 September 2003 at 8:51 PM
I agree, it's the most realistic looking hair I think I've seen. Very pleased with it.
Badco posted Sat, 13 September 2003 at 8:57 PM
I did, however, have to parent the hair to the M3 head. I thought, when it was applied, that it was suuposed to be automatically parented to the figure ?

If you look in the texture maps folder you will notice that the texture size and trans maps are huge and there are quite a few texture maps for the hair. What I did is back up my Yann hair texture folder then in the P5 texture folder what I did was reduce each texture map in half. Including the trans maps. My computer stopped getting hung up during the render stage. In another experiment I reduced the texture maps in half one more time, the hair still looked the same (good) and the render time was even faster. I like the Yann hair and I didn't want to stop using it so I was trying all sorts of things to try and get it to work in P5.
