Ok, i dont know if this has been asked before or not :) but here it goes, you see, i make lots of planet maps, big 4000x2000 kinda stuff, and while i can just make a sphere in Vue and map that with my planet map, it appears ahead of the clouds and atmosphere and all, what i want.. is a planet like the pre-made planets in Vue, but it wont let me simply change their texture, sooo i wonder, how do i add or modify one of the pre-existing planets like jupiter and such?? and with all the brightness and phase settings it sure would be alot easier than to have a sphere and mess with that. thanks, i hope u understand my problem :P

Good question, one I've asked many times late at night. Let's hope some erudite Vue dude/dudette can answer it!

You cannot! If you need a different texture for planets, create spheres:-) Guitta

oooo no tell me you are lyeing hehe, there gotta be a way, why would they make that great function and just IGNOOORE our needs to use it?? :P It's like they have some kind of copyright on earth planets only :P lol

Hey guys. This may not be exactly what your lookng for but here is a link to a thread in the Wings 3d forum. I was showing off an idea for creating planets with Wings3d and Vue4.____________________________________________________

I have created a pseudo-planet using a mapped sphere with high transparency settings. I haven't been able to reproduce the phases. Alpha planes don't work as enabling tranparency makes the alpha image visible.
Pity we can't edit the planet textures. Maybe in Vue 5? :-)
Cybermonk, thanks for the link. At last I understand the difference between displacement and bump mapping.

well, BigGreenFurryThing how did you make it appear behind the clouds? with light and opacity changes i think i could be able to make it to look pretty good

If I get time this weekend I'll make a little Flash tutorial and post it on my site. Watch this space (no pun intended).

kk nice :)) ;)

Vue must get the texture for use on the planet from someplace, can't we just replace the texture?
Tibbe posted Fri, 03 October 2003 at 3:55 PM
exactly

Planets: they're objects, Captain, but not as we know it. Place them anywhere, even up close to the camera, and they're always behind the clouds and below the horizon. So I don't think they're textured. There's no sub-directory for them in the main install directory either. Hardcoded into the program maybe? I'll crack on with that tutorial tomorrow.

yeah ive been looking everywhere, they must be in some kind of pack-file, you know like .big .whatever
DMM posted Fri, 03 October 2003 at 7:33 PM
Well they must be textured because they've got real-world detail on them. Its a bit of an oversight not to let people change/add planets. Seems like it would be simple to implement.
