Subject: Radeon 9600 pro not good enough for VUE4pro? + some ranting... ;o)

I have graphic board Radeon 9600 pro. And latest drivers.
Vue4 pro says it is not on their hardware list. Why is this? Is it too new or not good enough or what?
This feels so frustrating since the computer is not even 2 months old.

When told it is not on their list I get a choice to turn off OpenGL. When choosing 'Yes' I get a dialog saying the computer need to be restarted. When choosing 'OK' Vue goes into some kind of loop and refuses to quit. I can't even break it with Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Another problem:
When importing a scene from Poser 5 VuePro says it can't recognize the format .jpg for textures!

I also had the CDs loose in the package. Unfortunately there was some kind of glue on the app.CD so it couldn't install. I called to e-on in France (since I'm in Europe) and asked them what to do. They were very helpful and nice and said they send a new CD right away. I sent the damaged one back. Today I got the new CD.

Even if I feel frustrated right now and have tons of work wanting to be done in Vuepro, I'm happy there is a program like Vue. One can see the potentials right around the corner and e-on, I belive, is going there. Yes, it is a lot of money but hey, it wont matter in a hundred years from now.... ;o)

Having a 'qualified hardware' list is not unusual for professional graphics applications. Unfortunately most consumer level graphics cards don't make it onto these lists, although with a bit of luck there's usually no problems. I had to ditch my own Radeon in favour of an NVidia Quadro4 980 XGL card, which is an excellent card, lets me run 2 monitors off it, and cured all my graphical application problems. Unfortunately I had to take a game FPS hit but that's not too worrying for me.

Excuse me, but if the Radeon 9600,9700,or 9800 versions did not make the list, how did the Quadro 980XGL card? The Radeon 9800 and even down to to the 9600 cards are considered high quality graphics cards by many experts and should be able to run Vue 4 pro. The higher priced models are only $99 cheaper than your card. Radeons all ran VUE 4 and supported openGL. Also, where is the supported hardware list on Vue's home page? The only thing I see posted to run Vue 4 Pro is a 16 bit graphics card and a Pentium machine. Prehaps E-on would be so good as to publish the "qualified hardware list" that says these cards are incompatable. I can't find on their site where it says they are. If anyone can point this out, where it says Radeons are not compatable, please correct me..
Thanks

Your graphic card works fine with OpenGL. Don't worry about the error message. Just use it. I also have a 9700 and another beta tester had a 9500. The graphic cards list is not complete yet, that's why you cannot find it in the list.

Thank you gebe. I'll ignore the message then. :o)

I don't know that E-On have a qualified hardware list, I've never seen one, and to be fair I've never had a problem running Vue off my Radeon. The reason the cards mentioned don't appear on qualified hardware lists is that these cards are consumer level cards not designed for graphics applications. ATI, like NVidia, have a seperate range of cards for professional work and it is these cards that are tested and certified for use. If its any consolation to anybody, my Quadro card is rubbish at games.

The ATI All in Wonder 9700 must have made the list because I never got asked about that, and I run OpenGL great in VuePro. Some people have said that if they leave OpenGL on, it works anyway, so would definitely try that...

I'm in a real dilemna about getting Pro as I don't want to miss the cheap upgrade deadline but I definitely do not want to have the same OpenGL problems I had with Vue. So...

If anyone has Vue Pro's OpenGL working with a Radeon 9800 Pro, please would you tell me which driver you're using? Ta.

Cheers,
Mark

My Radeon 9100 worked ok but had some artifacts with the icons used to rotate an object. So I followed their instructions and downloaded the latest graphics drivers from ATI. Now I get a notice that it is unsuported and it locks up win 2000 pro so only a power down and a re boot can free up the PC. That was with OpenGL now I have to use it without OPen GL so I am worse off unless I go back to the original drivers.,,,,,,,this is sad.

Hmmm, I wonder if that's why it didn't ask in mind. Not running the latest drivers from ATI...I'm running driver set 6.14.01.6292 on my All in Wonder 9700 Pro if that's any help.

Thanks for the responses. I'm using ATi driver set 6.14.10.6378. Looks like I'll have to reinstall from the original CD and try that before deciding on the upgrade. Ho hum.

Cheers,
Mark
