Hello Yall, I've recently changed to PS7, and I'm having huge problems trying to make descent quality thumbnails. With PS6 all I'd do is resize the image and then save it as a jpeg with a resolution low enough to bring the file size down. But in PP7 I need to make the thumbnail tiny with the worst possible resolution to get the file size small enough to upload. Is there any extra data that photoshops saving with this file? How do I make good looking thumbnails? Examples can be seen here: http://www.renderosity.com/gallery.ez?deleteGallery=489442&Start=1&Artist=cingram&ByArtist=Yesretrocity posted Sat, 11 October 2003 at 6:32 PM
Hey cingram, welcome to the forum. First up, which method do you use? Do you use the "Save for Web" feature (Alt+Shift+Ctrl+S)? Do you use the "Save As" method and select JPEG from the drop-down menu? Also do you have "Image Preview" set to on in your preferences?
There are a few factors that impact the file size in your thumbnails and colour range is one, especially if the are subtle shifts like gradients and smoke or mist. These all add to the number of colours used. One trick i do is to use the "Sharpen" filter to tighten up some detail lost when resizing the thumbnail.

Thanks alot retrocity, I've been using the "Save as" method, so I'll give the "Save for web" feature a go. Also with the "image preview" should that be on or off. THanks again for the help, I can be a tad retarded when it comes these things.

No prob, we all start at the same place (rippen open the cellophane wrapper on the software ;))
The preference for the image preview should be OFF for the thumbnails. There has been problems with how the server reacts to the additional information in the past (actually its a whole web browser issues and not just Renderosity...)
What's cool about the "Save for Web" method is you can view it 4-up with different settings and experiment before deciding on the best option...
hope to see ya around more,
:)

Hi, check out my web site at http://mhd.tech.tripod.com/index15.htm....you will see a link for IRFANVIEW, click and download this viewer. With it you can manipulate just about any file format. Crop/Resize etc. etc etc. With this thunbnnails will be a piece of cake!!!

hey coolcat, IRFANview is an awesome FREE prog! i've been using it for quite some time and LOVE the speed for image browsing, like when you use the "thumbnail" (T) feature on a folder (it's the fastest and most stable app i've seen, beats PS browser "hands-down"!!).

Hello, I also have problems with thumbnails! I can't seem to get them to a general size, so they look neat in my gallery. Does the actual size of the photograph influence how "large" the thumbnail will be when it's reduced to 15 KB? I have IrfanView, PhotoImpact and Paintshop Pro, and will try the "Save for Web" approach as well. Thank you, Bye, Penny. (Member name = Tuppence)

Hi Tuppence! welcome to the forum,
one of the major impacters in thumbnails is the number of colours in its palette. Sometimes there are little "tweeks" you can do that changes the "k" (byte) size of your file without discernable differences in the image quality.
i like to try and crop to an area of interest when making a thumbnail. i find this better than resizing the "whole" image down to the "required" file limitations.
see ya' the forum,
:)

Hello retrocity, Thank you very much for your reply, the welcome and the information. I will crop my next thumbnails and see if I can get more regularity in their size. Best wishes, Bye, Tuppence.
