Bummer, hugs from me, been there done that. Started to label my cds better, I picked up a nifty little utility from free stuff, it's a file list utility, now I just place stuff in a folder, scan it with the utility, save the file list, place the folder on CD and the file list in the root directory, and voila', I can see all the files on that disk without opening any, A printout inserted into the CD case tells me without scanning the disk. Those interested check Poser freestuff, 'File List Maker' by laetia, plus for those of you who use poser there are bunches of handy utilites.

I made my own little file lister to do the same thing, I then embed all the file lists in an access database so that I can search and reference across all the CDs without even taking one off the shelf. (Not sure if this is geeky or habit because I used to work in a library)

BTW sorry to hear about the lost work, it's gutting when you lose something you've worked hard at.

hug, hugs hugs. been there, done that..not with bryce..but with short stories and articles that I've written, and photography. I've come up to one conclusion...stop looking..and those darn things will come staring at you in the face..when you don't need 'em!

thnaks for the support, will try this file lister thingy, it sounds like just the bizz, but it took me long enuogh to get into the habit of backing up, gotta be worth a try though, but u know us artistic types, we're all free-spirited and reckless, actually being efficient enough to library our bits seems to go against the grain. still have been looking at this image and battling with my inner demons, it may help me excorcise them to actually make it again. watch this space.

If you think it might be on one of the CDs, that you just haven't located it, check the .br5 file sizes. This one has to be HUGE. If not, well, a big hug from me, I once did a marathon 8 hrs of Brycing on a scene I was so excited about that I forgot to save even ONCE. Then I got the "Windows is stupid, so Bryce has to close now. Do you want to send us an e-mail about it?" Yeah, I got your e-mail, Billy boy! John

hug been there too. And it's SO not fun!
rj001 posted Fri, 24 October 2003 at 8:01 AM
i guess if it had been a crash that lost it i wouldn't have felt so blue, but having opened every Br4 file, (and even zipped archives, and still not found it thats worse.) (And don't even get me started on CD's with blister marks forming in the foil so that half of it is unreadable!) One upside is the fun of looking through the old collection, remembering the fun of putting some images together, and thinking (not without a little pride) "hey that wasnt so bad, and i did it!"

I lost my very first challenge pic, Atlantis. Well, I lost half of it anyway. I saved out two parts and the final but the front part is all that survives. I wanted to go back and rerender when I got a bigger computer. Unfortunately, it's where yours is now. I'm sorry for your loss. If you are like me though you are thinking how you wanted to build this building another way or put more details there. I have also found old files and tried to restart them. I usually get frustrated because I have learned so much about other techniques and want to do so many different things. It's often easier to start from scratch that to try to correct these. Cold comfort, I know, but it's true. It was a great scene. I'm sorry the original is gone.:(

if you need the original pic, I remember downloading it, I can find it if you have the 'gallery number'.. Yeah, been in the Tech support business for many a year (17), and have heard this song many a time..I once lost an interactive spreadsheet that I spent 6 hours coding (the initial lesson)..once lost a database because I physically laid the floppy (remember them?) on top of a hard drive..not even Norton's can get that back.
Sorry to hear of the loss, I liked the pic, and vehicles always up the interest, especially in city scenes..good luck, hope you find a way to get it back (looked in the temp directory?..I seem to remember the occasional file winding up there..unfortunately the naming changes..but it's a thought).

I know how you feel rj! I lost a pic that was going very well too. I hope you can redo the image. I know I want to do something similar.drawbridgep posted Fri, 24 October 2003 at 3:51 PM
I spent three months in America and took my laptop. Really got into Bryce in a big way and created loads of objects and scenes. Also was taking loads of photographs and storing them on the LT too. Can you guess what happened? "I really must back all this up sometime." DOH! Blue screen, windows crash, Windows inability to loads, DOS inability to load, computer inability to do anything other than count the memory and beep. Had to reformat. Blah! So yeah, you have my sympathy. I now back up religiously. I have CD's full of stuff. probably loads of duplicates. But better safe than sorry. Great city scene BTW. Real shame to have lost it.

Well all I can give you are lots of HUGS. I've never had this happen yet because I haven't hit the point where I feel like my stuff is great. I'm getting better and some of it is coming out good but nothing that compares with what you've lost. HUGS

Don't feel too bad....odds are your skills have improved since then and you can do it better now....8^) I lost my first 2 years worth of bryce files (all the bryce3 files) to a harddrive crash. All that's left are a few crappy renders. Most of it was stuff that would embarass me now but there are some that I would have really liked to keep. Back it up, then back it up again. We feel your pain....
