Hi, I'm working on a medieval scene actually and wanted to show you some WIPs (Work in progress). The final image will show a whole street scene with several buildings. There's much work left though. All the "green" parts are only conceptual and not finished. Comments and suggestions are wanted and very welcome! Take Care, Jimi

Don't know if I keep the weathercock. It's a very highpoly object. Thank you for watching - if you have some suggestions I'd be happy! :-) Jimi

Wow! Wish my SaveOn Drug store looked like this! I would not keep the weathercock either. Looks a bit out of place. What are using to model with? Peggy

Hi Peggy, thank you very much. As always, I use SketchUp to model, but I render with Bryce. :) Probably I move the weathercock to another building. It doesn't fit very well on that small tower. Greets, Jimi

coming along really good :)) i just love the Fachwerk (don't know what you would call it in english)

derjimi posted Fri, 24 October 2003 at 5:00 PM

Thank you. :-) I think they call it half-timbered house. J.

awesome model!!

PJF posted Fri, 24 October 2003 at 6:02 PM

Your Sketchup work is coming along in leaps and bounds. I purchased the program about a month ago but have been too busy to get involved with it much as yet. Your output is inspiration to take up the reins. Just in case you're not aware, you can smooth the imported model in Bryce to get rid of the polygon faceting on the rounded parts. Select a part, or the whole group, and click on the 'E' button. In the dialog that appears, use the slider to choose an angle that is slightly greater than that of polygon intersections on the parts that need to be rounded. Click on the big 'smooth' button and then on the tick (check) to exit the dialog. Certain areas of the model will now appear smoothed, as in the slap-dash render above.

catlin_mc posted Fri, 24 October 2003 at 6:20 PM

Excellent work Jimi, you've made a really good job of this building so far. As for the weather vane it does look kind of odd but from that angle I would expect it to. How's about showing us what the tower with the vane looks like from ground level? Catlin

Incarnadine posted Fri, 24 October 2003 at 10:17 PM

Very sweet stuff. I am still playing with your tower kit! Got two in progress, an update of The Pass and a new floating rock oupost image. Keep at it and we will continue admiring!

Pass no temptation lightly by, for one never knows when it may pass again!

These are beautiful models. I can't wait to see the finished scene.

danamo posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 2:14 AM

Jimi, this is an excellent model! I have a question though. (this subject came up during our recent History Challenge) Is this a medievel era building as it looks today, or part of a scene set in the medievel era. The reason I ask is that plate glass was invented in France in the very late 1600s. If this building pre-dates that time I suggest that the individual pieces of glass would probably be much smaller. Many buildings only had shutters and no glass(glass was only affordable to the rich)This is by no means meant as a critique my friend, only as a thought to ponder. If I am way off-base here just disregard this. :-)

derjimi posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 3:27 AM

Thank you very much for all your comments! Danaomo, this image will show the street in the early 1700-1800 so that I can use the glass windows. I like the idea of letting light shine through the windows very much. It's interesting to read about the invention of plate glass, thanks! PJF, thank you for your smoothing hint. I smooth meshes when I import in Bryce often. The towers are unsmoothed because they're unfinished (as you can see by the green texture). After finishing they will be still unsmoothed though I want to to some copper roofing with it. If I can give you any help with SketchUp I'd be happy. :) Catlin, the weather vane will look very small from the ground because of that high building. I will move that thing to another building I think. More images will follow soon. Thanks, Jimi

derjimi posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 3:30 AM

For Catlin. :)

Erlik posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 5:46 AM

derjimi, is the weathercock a lattice? If so, smooth the hell out of it in terrain editor and you will lower the poly count greatly. And you'll get just a silhouette from down below, anyway. Or you can draw it in something like Rhino and create a surface. If you want, I'll try. Shouldn't take much time. BTW, why "O" and not "E" for East? :-)

derjimi posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 5:59 AM

Hi Erlik, the weathercock is a full polygon model, made by myself. O ist Osten in german. :-) J.

derjimi posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 1:23 PM

I used an online translator and it said 'weathercock'. Good to know the right word now. :)

catlin_mc posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 1:25 PM

Weathercock is another term for it but I think most folk use vane because of the other connotations(sp) associated with cock. hehehe ;} Catlin

Erlik posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 3:50 PM

Plus, it's not always a cock. :-) Can be almost anything. jimi, the poly count is high because you made a solid and the thickness is uneven, so there has to be a lot of polygons. A surface would have much less polys. I have the same problem in Rhino.

-- erlik

derjimi posted Sat, 25 October 2003 at 4:05 PM

Well, the thickness is even. It's a flat plane. it's more the edges which are all curved to make them look smooth. :) Thanks for all your feedback - it's great how this thread grows! Jimi

derjimi posted Sun, 26 October 2003 at 5:01 AM

Still untextured, but with more details.

derjimi posted Sun, 26 October 2003 at 5:03 AM

... i couldn't resist.. ;-)

Erlik posted Sun, 26 October 2003 at 7:48 AM

Nah, I was not clear. Yes, it's what you say, the thickness edge has all the curves, so there has to be a lot of little polygons.

derjimi posted Sun, 26 October 2003 at 8:13 AM

Yeah. But I decided now to not care about. :) Streetlamp's finished now, too. The light inside will be tweaked later. :) J.
