I didn`t want to mention this after the fiasco of the other free thing I mentioned which was in a newsletter only for new customers. This one is okay though. It is very nice of dark whisper to make this character.

Very nice :) Does anyone know which textures she uses?
xantor posted Thu, 27 November 2003 at 7:42 PM
PapaBluemarlin you can download texture templates as well as the sara figure. I dont know if any other textures are compatible with her
Dale B posted Thu, 27 November 2003 at 8:00 PM
Her texture wrap is the same as V3's, so at the least I would surmise that there will be a plugin for the UTC that will allow other textures to be used...

Oh joy... ANOTHER anime/-ini/big t1tted/wasp-stung-my-lip excuse for a character. Yes, it is great of Daz to release this, free, and unheralded. Yes they really DO take good care of us - a point I have made in many posts. But for #@^$-sake, aren't there enough of these out there? So, this is a big YEA! for those who like this kind of stuff, and for the rest of us, it is more crap to view in the galleries!!!! Daz - spend more effort on Daz Studio!
numanoid posted Thu, 27 November 2003 at 8:35 PM
Mmmmmm...... I fail to see how a free figure made by Dark Whisper is preventing Daz from continuing their efforts on Daz Studio. They are basically hosting a free download of a new figure for you, and if you don't want it, then you don't have to download it. This in no way prevents them from working on Daz Studio or on any of their other work. I think that no matter what it was they were giving away for free, someone would complain about it. Mmmm.... Sitting here wondering when was the last time anybody gave me something for free when it wasn't my birthday or christmas. Mmmm.... Sitting here wondering if I have ever complained because someone gave something away for free.

wasp-stung-my-lip excuse for a character If you look at her nose and lips, I think she looks like a slightly tooned African woman, myself. I don't know why they haven't played up that angle. I think she looks a bit odd in Caucasian textures with the default face, but she looks quite nice with African skin tones. (Although, in pokeydot's pic above, for some reason she looks like a tooned Drew Barrymore to me.) Daz - spend more effort on Daz Studio! It's going to be released in beta next week. DW has been working on Sara completely independently - as far as I know, he has nothing to do with D|S, so this character hasn't been a distraction from D|S at all. Sara doesn't use V3's textures - I already compared the templates. I'm sure there will be a UTC plug-in for this soon enough. (DW didn't give an ETA for it.) Cheers!

I might not have too much use for Sara, already having Koshini and doing nearly all my work with V3 and M3...but for heaven's sakes, I don't whine about getting a free figure! "Excuse for a character"?! YOU do better then. I think I finally understand why so many former free stuff providers were driven to become merchants. The insane complaining around here recently would drive me to start selling my stuff too...but no one would pay for the sort of things I make. ;) Anyway, thank you for offering this figure freely DW. Ryamka, I hope that you did not know that Sara was not an official DAZ figure and that's why you said what you did. DW - not criticizing your talent. Not one bit. Your skills more than show through on this project and your others (artwork, etc). I just think that the "market" for this type of character (female/quasi anime/...) has reached a saturation point. I would be a LOT more thrilled, personally, for a MALE version of the character, as Ichiro is about the only thing filling that niche. And before you ask, YES I would pay for it; it does not have to be free. My comment was on the plethora of smilar characters that are in the marketspace (free or otherwise). As I mentioned, it is a VERY generous gift, I just think a bit more variety would be better. All my opinion.

"Welcome to the Poser Forum. Would you like to see the whine list?" You know, some people can't afford to buy all the new stuff out there, so to get a new figure - ANY new figure - free, is a great thing for them. And for those of us who can afford to get all the new stuff... it's also great. If it's not something you want - fine, don't get it. But complaining about the style of a freebie figure is nuts. There are many great things out there that are freebies that really don't appeal to me. But you won't hear me say "Just what we needed - another Tank model, like we don't have enough." Someone out there will be looking for exactly that kind of model. Just because I don't need it, doesn't mean no one needs / wants it. Frankly, I am deeply disturbed about this trend to slam anything and everything lately in here. Someone went to all the effort to produce something that a lot of people would like, and to top it all off they give it away free instead of charging for it. They could have. This doesn't deserve slamming. It deserves applauding. Silke

"I just think that the "market" for this type of character (female/quasi anime/...) has reached a saturation point." I personally think the marketplace is way oversaturated with ubiquitous vicky clones im not a blind DAZ loyalist but it seems to me that this is yet another example of DAZ and its brokerd artists watching closely what the current demand in the user base is and meeting it. Look at how quickly they put out the freak model after myself and others expressed great dissapoinment that M3 did NOT offer the type hulkish figure we wanted to use.
Silke posted Fri, 28 November 2003 at 9:25 AM
I would be very interested to know what the general male/female user distribution is on Poser. For some reason I think the main poser user body is female. But on the other hand, the main body of model creators - be that clothing, figures or props - seems to be male. While the main body of texture creators seems to be female. I could be completely wrong here, of course. :) But if the above is correct it would explain a few things. User base is mainly female. Modeller base is mainly male. Tex Creator base is mainly female. So the models produced would be predominately female, since the female body will likely appeal more to the (male) modeller base. I'm just hypothesising (sp?), but it really would explain why there are a lot more female, than male figures out there. :) Don't mind me.... I'll go and ponder this some more. Silke

This isn`t a vicky clone. I think the more different characters people make the better so that people wont only be using vicky and koshini and ichiro in their renderings and there will be more variety. So If anyone is wondering if they should make any new female OR male characters then I would just want to say DO IT!

Modeller base is mainly male. Tex Creator base is mainly female. This seems to be the general rule. Of course, I kind of like being one of the only exceptions to that rule :) I can think of only about 5 male texture creators (skin and clothes) off the top of my head yet can rattle off about 20 female names in a split second. It's really strange how it's weighted.
Silke posted Fri, 28 November 2003 at 8:09 PM
It's actually not all that strange if you think about it. The boys are more concerned with the shape of things, and tactile (in a sense) stuff than the girls are. Modelling isn't easy (for me at least) and my brain just doesn't want to deal with all the wires. But the guys don't seem to have that problem. Or maybe they just have a lot more patience with it. The girls usually have a better sense of color and shading, or maybe they are just more inclined to apply that, so I'm really not surprised about the texture creation side being female dominated. I'm still not sure about the user base, but something tells me that there is more female than male in Poser, but more male than female in - for example - Vue. (I'm tellin ya, it's the wires! :P) Anyway, that's my take on it :) And FWIW - both the modellers and the texture / pose creators are doing a damn fine job no matter which gender they are :) Silke

i really wouldn't dare to sell things like that... no match with the quality standards of the marketplace, especially given the fact i have roughly less than 6 months of experience :) As long as i am not satisfied with my skills, have things to learn and the opportunity of not speinding any money to maintain a website, i intend to keep focused on freebies, that's all it worth ! (never tried aiko though, could you show me/send me renders of it ? i heard she was one of the least bad attempt of an anime character in the early days) by the way i do not want to rise a debate/argument about comparing women and men.. for me we are equal in results and potential but nature made us not using same methods to achieve same goals. so far what i have read in scientific magazines was that the brain pattern of women was more using both emisphere, both emitionnal and mechanical ones, and by this, they are more prone to artistic sensitivity, i bet it is important for texture making, shading, drawing. Men are a bit more hearthly/binary thinking, with either their emotionnal or mechanical part. As such, they had been seen to have more affinities with geometry and spatial appliations of it, as for modelling in 3d. By the way it is good we are not all the sames... there are differences, that do not make one superior to the other, just rather complementary. What is a good mesh without texture ? what is a nice texture that cannot fit any mesh ? for sara, yes i discovered in pain she could not at all use the v3 stuff after all, despite what was suggested (maybe a uv remapping, but it would be a tedious work)
Xena posted Fri, 28 November 2003 at 8:35 PM
I'm just a big tomboy at heart, and that's why I like to model LMAO And you both have really good points and I totally agree. The way we are 'wired' is what makes us want to do particular things. I know for myself I've always been more inclined to do 'manly' things, like build furniture and tinker with mechanical stuff. And I never owned dolls as a child :) Perhaps I'm just playing dress ups on my dolls now snicker I'm left handed too so perhaps that has something to do with it? Heheeh I wasn't going to start a debate on male and female brain patterns :) I was just wondering - in light of the "Just what we needed" - if there is maybe something to it, and if that would explain the "more female figures than male". Men and Women are different. That's a fact. We think different, we act different, we're good at different things. That's not to say that a woman can't do what a man can do any less good than said man, or the other way around. There are way too many examples that would prove anyone wrong who made such an observation. My only thought was that maybe something that appeals to mens artistic talent doesn't appeal as much to womens artistic talent, and that's why we have this slant in models. I honestly don't mind all the female models. Far from it. As a "Poser" I appreciate both the aesthetics of the male, and the female body. Even though a lot of my friends are wondering if secretly I swing the other way because I render so many girls lol. (I don't, but even if I did, that's still not a bad thing.) There are models I like more than others. I'm not one for the Anime type figures, but that's just me. Yes, they are cute and I don't mind seeing anime renders, but personally I hardly ever render any. It's just me, wondering, that's all. :) I do occasionally wonder about some mighty strange things, but this one struck me as kind of interesting :) And to quote a friend of mine after I sent him a link to a render I did to err.... cheer him up.... I guess I'm kind of old fashioned in that I agree with men and women being different and are most comfortable in particular roles. And of course there are always going to be exceptions to the rule (hey I'm one LOL) Men are 'generally' stronger and more mechanically minded than women. Women tend to rely more on emotional responses whereas men are more clinical. Women are 'generally' more nurturing than men - which I honestly think is due to that fact that we have a womb and men don't. Our brains just operate differently. Live with someone of the opposite sex for 12 months then tell me we aren't different LOL These are just things that are. They don't account for every individual, but the 'general' way of things. And while we are noticing differences ... guys, what's with the dropping of clothing on the floor? Hello, does testosterone make you blind to the fact that there IS a laundry basket??? ***says she who has 3 sons who obviously never put their clothing where it's supposed to go rolls eyes ***
