trying to change the etxture on a metal surface, select chrome and I get asked for teh location of 'reflection.jpg'. Any ideas?

Well, it's asking for that jpg image file... How about doing a search on your PC for "reflection.jpg" and see what shows up? Norm

done that and it doesnt appear. my question would perhaps have been better phrased as "is this a Poser or an application specific file?"

Which material is this? I mean who made it... I tried the "chrome ball" and "Chrome brushes" standard P5 materials and neither of them should call an image map. I don't have just a basic "Chrome" material in any of the freebies I've downloaded.
