The tree skirts are lovely - but I'm intrigued - I've never seen (or heard of) a tree skirt in reality - are they an American thing, or have I just been leading a sheltered life?

Don't know if it's just an American thing, but it's just used as something nice-looking to cover up the bare trunk at the bottom and those awful-looking tree stands ;o). Laurie

They also make nice backdrops for a little train set or other decoration around the bottom of the tree. Does anyone remember how they used to sell some kind of fluffy white stuff as pretend snow but it would tear and get all over the place...the skirts are a much nicer, easier to deal with idea. Of course I have Bella the terrible (small, young, busy dog) so having a tree is out of the question except in a virtual setting. Thank you Laurie and Dizzie for the nice memory!

This year is the first time I can recall seeing 'tree skirts' on sale Down Under. They sure DO look nice and coloutful :)

I remember the first tree skirts I saw as a kid, were white with glitter on them...trying to simulate snow under the tree. They sure make the space under the tree look so much nicer...

lol Dizzie! I remember those! We use to put them along our mantle above the fireplace and set up the christmas Village! Ahhhh the good old days :)

I think most of us had "the white flocked stuff" or "white felt with glitter" tree skirts back then to simulate snow. Patchwork tree skirts with rich colors and fancy embroidery became popular when I was in college (around 1970), and I remember making a 12 Days of Christmas one with felt cutouts and jewels and sequins and braided trims. It took weeks to make, but lasted for many, many years before becoming too ratty to use. My current tree skirt is simply a claret-colored crumpled upholstery velvet with a nice wide gold fancy braid trim. I didn't glue the trim, but loosely stitched it so that I can salvage it later. They are easy to make: get wide fabric in a length equal to its width. Turn it upside down. Find the center point. Measure out on the radius to mark the circle and cut. Make a slit to the middle. Turn it back over and hem, trim, bejewel to your heart's content. Note: I saw a tree skirt with a bit of fancy braidwork in a catalog for $300. That is ridiculous for something you can make without a pattern! Carolly

They have occasionally put a Christmas item in the newsletter as a freebie, IIRC, but I think it was in the middle of summer. This tree would also be a great Real Deals item... without the decorations it can be used all year. They might also have a day of grace on Christmas or soon after where you can pick up missed items, but the reason to spread them out is to get people dropping by daily (a good habit) and perhaps also to spread out the load on their servers. Some of these downloads are pretty hefty. Carolly

Didn't they have a day last year, when all items from the free christmas section, were put up for those who missed any? I'm hoping they will this year too 'cos I had access problems on a couple of days and missed it. Catlin
