Oh poop. And I'm 400 mi. from my own 'puter. I've had concerns that this would be a memory pig, especially since I already have trouble with any unimesh figure in P4, if I have other apps open or haven't restarted recently (biggest problem is probably a loaded hard drive / no scratch discs). Any projected minimum requirements? (Take care and Merry Xmas)

Veritas777 posted Wed, 24 December 2003 at 8:04 PM

It appears that the DAZ files are descriptive links to the content files! This appears to allow a TOTALLY COOL new content management system allowing HUGE FLEXIBILITY in content management!!! (Huummmm! Wonder why a CONTENT CREATION company would think of THAT!? ----Duh!!!)

Penguinisto posted Wed, 24 December 2003 at 8:09 PM

It runs well enough on a Pentium III 866MHz processor w/ 512MB of PC-133 RAM in it, sporting a GeForce2Go w/ 16MB video RAM. The screen was also a 15" LCD (set at 1600x1400 resolution) XGA monitor (I tested it on my old Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop in case yer curious, and no major slowdowns at all.) Memory usage is pretty dang slim compared to Poser 4, esp. compared to P5, and even Vue... (seriously!) Startup takes about as long as Poser 4, but mostly because it looks through and refreshes content folders (which you can specify either during initial load where it searches automatically, or later on via the menu.) It also runs quite well on a P4m 2.4GHz box w/ 1GB of RAM and a GeForce4 w/ 128MB RAM :) /P

Penguinisto posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 10:47 AM

ming is right... but then again, D|S is still in the teething stages, and everybody learned from the 'who cares if it don't work - let's ship it anyway!' debacle that was Poser 5. They had to pick a small enough group to keep up with the public testing, so the Plat Club got picked. Trust me... there are days when I wish I could just wait for the finished item and not deal with the debugs :) /P

Dave posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 11:03 AM

Penguinisto posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 11:20 AM

Dave - yes. The folks at DAZ' forums are aware of it and have been sending along word to the higher-ups about it. As soon as DAZ gets back to work, they'll set it up for the brokers. (If it's any consolation, the mods at DAZ Forum didn't get theirs either (evil grin).) /P

Ghostofmacbeth posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 11:23 AM

The brokers will be getting it soon ... Just a weird way they have to pforce the PC in place or something. As Peng said that rbtwhiz said they will get it today or tomorrow at the latest

Ghostofmacbeth posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 11:24 AM

ming .. Nope. It will be free for beta release soemtime later for all the public

Penguinisto posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 11:40 AM

Cathrine - sorry you feel sad and disappointed on Christmas morning... Me, I intend on getting out of the house come noon today and not even thinking about computers, let alone 3d proggies. Next year at this time, I'll have a slobbering 11-month-old baby crawling around the house (and prolly trying to eat the tree ornaments), so I'm rather enjoying this quiet morning while the missus sleeps in :) There is good news about D|S, though; it will come out for free once the bugs have been squashed. It isn't a trick at all, nor was it intended to be any such thing; it's more of a way to get a big enough control group of testers without flooding the code monkeys with requests. This is common with many programs, right up to Microsoft (who performs their alpha testing via a select group of MSDN affiliates.) As for Kazaa, anyone inclined to use such a thing for programs can takes their chances (viruses, trojans, etc), but it would prolly be a lot safer, and still free, if they just waited until the stable version of D|S comes out. The brokers will get hold of it tomorrow at most (as Ghost mentioned), but they get to hammer on bugs and crashes, too. /P

Penguinisto posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 12:16 PM

It's still Christmas morning in this time zone, but I just got word that they've working on it right now. Shouldn't be too long before you get an email... Matt is in up to his armpits holding the fort down right now. /P

ming posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 12:18 PM

I don't see where a control group would have anything to do with it. The more people testing, the better. I think it's just a money thing.

Penguinisto posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 12:36 PM

" I don't see where a control group would have anything to do with it. The more people testing, the better." Err, not if you're the programming team. They've only got so many code-monkeys, so it's easier to keep the bug reports down to Niagra Falls size, as opposed to the Biblical Flood proportions they'd face if everyone went at it. The only "money thing" is that DAZ can't afford the number of programmers required for a general public alpha... even Microsoft can barely afford something like that. The results will still cost nothing even after it gets out to the general public. I'm sorry it'll take some time, but the good news is, once you do get hold of it, it'll work far better (and have more features) than what the PC folks are wrestling with now. /P

Ming, With all due respect you have little room to complain, you feel like the Plat club was a waste of money and DAZ stated early on that they would be early releasing DS to Plat club members. Personally, I have found the Plat Club to be a good deal, as have many others. It is very simple as to why Plat Club members are gettig the initial release, it is a benefit to being a member and asking someone to post it somewhere for others to try is unethical. BabaLouie

xantor posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 4:07 PM

If they don`t put it out for "ordinary" people soon it will be on kazaa winmx and all the rest.

Penguinisto posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 8:36 PM

Ming Sez: " So, since you can't afford enough programers, you don't want to hear about all the problems...just some of them. " Not exactly. Dunno how much experience you have with program development, but every major commercial program out there that isn't Open Source does it the same way... release it to a small cadre of pre-alpha experienced testers to bang out the huge and obvious bugs (trust me, you really don't want to know how many times I've had to sit through a re-install of Windows XP just to re-create a clean environment during pre-alpha testing.) Then, it goes to a wider array of folks to get a larger sample of machinery to test it out on (which cures a wider variety of not-so-nasty bugs.) Finally, it goes out to the general public, where the smallest bugs can be finessed out. Now compare that with Poser 5*, where they were pressured by EGI-Sys to push a short beta-testing program, then out to the public at large. Take a cruise through the Poser 5-related complaint threads... and that was their "finished product." (this isn't a bag on CL since they were pressured to do it, but it goes to show what would happen if you had gotten what you wanted - a push to the public of a raw and unfinished proggie.) * again, this is not a bag on Curious Labs - read the whole paragraph plz :) Xantor sez: " I didnt know microsoft even tested their products ha ha*" You'd be surprised. I prefer Linux to anything made by Microsoft, but I can tell you that even MS takes quite a bit of time and effort to test their stuff before releasing it. Microsoft's problem isn't in testing and release of apps, it's in the basic structural flaws of the OS itself, IMHO. " *If they dont put it out for "ordinary" people soon it will be on kazaa winmx and all the rest." Sure... and folks who do such a stupid thing like download it from there take their chances with trojans, backdoors, and a zillion other ways for some 13-yr. old script kiddie to own their computers. Oh, and typical virus-catchers and firewalls aren't going to catch a lot of the backdoors and trojans that the person intentionally installs. Besides, a typical download off of kazaa, winmx, e-donkey/e-mule, etc takes about 10x as long as just straight-up downloading from the DAZ server. Even BitTorrent would take much longer, assuming someone actually bothered to seed an unstable alpha proggie in the first place... To those out there humming up Kazaa now? They're certainly welcome to try, of course (the proggie costs nothing anyway), but they won't get any sympathy from DAZ when their boxes becomes someone else's property, or it chokes to death and takes all the data with it (shrug.) /P

xantor posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 8:44 PM

By the way I wasnt saying that it was a good thing thatstudio will be on kazaa etc. I was just pointing out what will probably happen although It wont actually do daz any real harm but Im sure they dont want it being distributed by anyone apart from themselves.

maclean posted Thu, 25 December 2003 at 9:21 PM

'It wont actually do daz any real harm' True, but not really the point. The point is that you do NOT want to encourage these leeches at kazaa, etc, in any way whatsoever. I agree with babalouie.
