I hope I didn't leave anything out and this starts you on your way to using terrains and lattices (they work exactly the same way). The difference between terrains and lattices is, a lattice is two sided(the same on both sides) and a terrain is one sided (your detail will only show one side, the other is flat)...:)

There are lots more things you can do with lattices and terrains than what I have shown above....

Thanks so much for posting this Zahn - I've been trying to work out lattices for ages. Much appreciated for the time you spent posting this.

Thank you so much for going through all the trouble to show how to do this, Zhann. I surely appreciate it alot! big hugs

Nice tut, Zhann, this method can save a lot of modelling time with simple objects. In the Nirvana album cover parody (the thread titled, "For Pakled (and Everybody else)", the dollar bill is a terrain, and the bubbles and fish hook are lattices. These were painted in the Terrain Editor itself, mostly cause I'm lazy. :^) With some practice, you can get pretty good with it, but the best results are going to come from a paint program. John

You are a gem Zhann, this is much better than the tut I made on the subject. I guess you are a better teacher than I. This tut will come in handy for lots of folks and it makes life so much easier when making complex meshes in Bryce. 8) Catlin

Wow, I had no idea so many people needed this info, you are all welcome....(Catlin, not a better teacher, I just did it so I could understand it, although teaching kids art does help you to break things down to the simplest components). Terrains and lattices are so versatile, just look at what AgentSmith can do with them.....8) If anybody has trouble with this definitely ask questions and I'll do my best to answer them....have fun!

Zhann, you did an excellent job on this tut. I too am surprised to all the responses. Just goes to show how some of us take it all for granted always thinking everyone else knows this info. A shameless plug I know, and not to detract from your tutorial, but to demonstrate the strength of this technique, allow me to show my recent addition to the Bryce gallery in which Ive used this very same procedure quite heavily, click the URL above to view.Erlik posted Thu, 08 January 2004 at 4:47 PM
Two things: it's better to raise the terrain resolution before you load the picture. You'll geet a sharper and crisper terrain that way. Also, it works best with square images. You will get a distorted image on the terrain if the pic is not square and will have to hand-adjust the dimensions. Great tutorial, Zhann.

I personally think that Zhann is a valued member here because she is pretty knowledgable in all things Bryce, along with her art training and life experience she brings many things to light which otherwise would take forever to come upon yourself. Please don't mind the flattery Zhann, I just feel you deserve the recognition for all the valued work you do and all you bring to this community. 8) Catlin

Erlik, you get the same sharpness doing it after it's loaded, as you do before it is, the only thing people forget to do after increasing the res is to hit 'APPLY', that is the most important thing...and having the greyscale or bw in .bmp format, although I see the png converter does a pretty nice job too.... The other thing to remember is, after adjusting the slider upwards, also hit 'APPLY' and it will give you the clearest, crispest, sharpest terrain and lattices. Remember after doing anything with those adjustments, hit the 'Apply' so Bryce applies them to your image...

Catlin, Ardiva, I know what I know today from the generous folks here at the forum, (and Real World Bryce) there isn't another forum on this site that has as helpful a bunch of artist's than here, always something to learn and those willing to explain it....:)

catlin_mc posted Fri, 09 January 2004 at 2:01 PM
Now I got to say that when you ask a question over there they can be very helpful, but the thing that makes me larf is when a thread starts and everyone goes over the top and it ends up a screeming match all over nothing. 8) I read one yesterday and the guy who posted the thread was as amused as I was that folk had gone slightly mad and it was reaching the 100 posts mark. lol 8) Catlin

Thanks for the very informative tut Zhann... It taught me a thing or two. Much appreciated. 8) I am right there with ya ocddoug.... I still haven't learned to do this. Now I have something else to work at. Lol. Zhann.... you are right in that this is the people here in the Bryce forum are very generous with their knowledge and are more than willing to help others out. Just gotta appreciate other people's knowledge. 8)
