Subject: how to use a 512x512 jpeg picture for materials to texture?

I'm ana vid user of vue 4 pro. When I create terrains I wish to use materials that are in 512x512 jpg format. When I go to change material it wants .mat file. How do i use a jpeg texture picture that I have to place onto the terrain?
