... based on some input for more contemporary architecture. This new series is code-named Whitechapel, and is being modeled after 1880 vintage Whitechapel district of London. Here's the first model based on some of my research. Windows raise and lower, curtains open and close, etc. I did something different on the texturing, which is to put the windows, curtains, etc. on separate maps, to make it more flexible. This may come along slowly, because I'm thinking my way through this one carefully... As always, input, critiques and comments are most welcome. PS... there's 4 more ready to release, with one in development... once I get this one well under way... :O)

Drat! I almost got in the front row. Oh, wait...this isn't Dr. Geep's class! (sorry) Hey, is this some "Jack-the-Ripper"-era stuff? I'm looking forward to it.

DanR posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 6:54 AM

This is great news and it looks like you're off to a good start. For reference material I'd suggest checking books and sites relating to Jack the Ripper as many of them have contemporary pictures of the murder sites. www.casebook.org has some in their Victorian London section. Gustave Dore's illustrations of London, although made slightly earlier, will also be useful as the architecture in the East End didn't change much. I'm really looking forward to this one so let me know if I can help with refernces (I'm based in London). Dan

liteluvr posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 8:45 AM

Thanks for the responses gang... Kayjay: soon... very soon. I had this thought hit me over the weekend, and wanted to get a proof of concept down first. I pretty much suspended work during the holidays due to vacation and a new baby, but things are ramping back up. ChuckEvans: You got it... it's based on my research around the Ripper period. DanR: Coincidentally, casebook was the site where I got quite a bit of reference material. I'll look for Dore's book to add to it. Also, any reference photos, textures, etc. you can supply will get you a freebie when I'm done. :o)

kayjay97 posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 8:52 AM

OOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on the new baby!!!!!

I'll be happy to help, freebie or no freebie. The building shown looks similar to 29 Hanbury Street, though without the attic windows. The casebook site has a close-up of the brickwork on some of the still remaining buildings. Are these the king of shots you're looking for? If so, I can head down there at the weekend with my digital camera.

liteluvr posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 2:38 PM

Good eye! It was based on the 29 Hanbury Street photo. I added the attic as an option to get better usage out of the model. I'll likely do optional dormers, etc. in others. regarding the camera, I'd much appreciate hi-res brick, stone, street, etc. textures of period structures still standing. That would be awesome! For comparison, here's the link to the source image as posted on the casebook website: http://www.casebook.org/victorian_london/sitepics.w-han.html

RICHARD posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 6:23 PM

great work keep it coming,as long as your making stores how about the store fronts in the image attached-please-thanks

DanR posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 6:28 PM

Looking good! I'll head out this weekend to get those pics for you. There are certainly still examples of original brickwork and cobbles around, though the light isn't too good this time of year. Interested in the Ten Bells Public House as a corner piece?

liteluvr posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 7:16 PM

ABSOLUTELY! That was one of the buildings I was going to work on. I have a couple of new images of the exterior, and was going to see how 'old' I could get it. Anything and EVERYTHING reference and texture-wise is appreciated.

DanR posted Tue, 20 January 2004 at 8:10 PM

I've just read that The Ten Bells exterior isn't original, so maybe The Pricess Alice (now called City Darts) would be better. I've also decided to join a Jack the Ripper tour conducted by Donald Rumbelow (author of The Complete Jack the Ripper), which seems a painless and educational way to do some scouting. I'll IM you when I have something for you.

ChuckEvans posted Wed, 21 January 2004 at 10:05 AM

I have some pictures of the "Jack the Ripper" street in Madame Tusaud's (sp?) museum (I think) but they are on slides and in the attic somewhere (sniff).

liteluvr posted Wed, 21 January 2004 at 1:08 PM

If they're handy, that'd be great, but if your attic is like mine, I wouldn't go up there for money! lol

Jeff she is just gorgeous - I wish you all the best!

Finister posted Sat, 24 January 2004 at 5:35 PM

Wow - I've been looking all over for Victorian London buildings. These look great!! Please let us know when they're in the MP. I'll definitely grab them!

liteluvr posted Wed, 28 January 2004 at 11:04 PM

And a little more WIP... another building and a vacant lot with various sized components. More buildings and streets to come.

And my first 'close-up' image of some elements together, along with a feeble play at lighting. This is always the part that scares me, because if they don't look good up close, it's back to the texturing board... so to speak...

ChuckEvans posted Fri, 30 January 2004 at 8:47 AM

I'm not sure but I think the brightness (gamma?) on your monitor, lite, is off. Your images are coming out really dark! All the other images I see are fine so, I'm assuming your monitor setting is a bit off. Anyone else see it as too dark?

liteluvr posted Fri, 30 January 2004 at 8:51 AM

This one was indeed a dark image, by design. I lowered the brightness settings on the Poser lights to see how well the textures would fare in low light. The other images were done with a standard 3 light setup I have configured. Since I don't really do a lot of Poser images, I keep the lights to a minumum to facilitate fast test renders. Good eye though.

ChuckEvans posted Fri, 30 January 2004 at 9:04 AM

Tks, lite. Oh, and just so ya know...I'm gonna get this set and the RDNA set. I suspect a lot of people will want as much variety as they can get.

liteluvr posted Fri, 30 January 2004 at 9:18 AM

I haven't taken a long look at the Transpond set yet. Somehow I want to make sure that I don't 'one-off' Chris and Judith's stuff. I'm hoping that the two sets will nicely complement each other.

kayjay97 posted Fri, 30 January 2004 at 9:39 AM

Belive me, they will complement each other, Yep, sure will!

ChuckEvans posted Fri, 30 January 2004 at 10:12 AM

One difference is the addition of "small" items in the RDNA product (and I can use those anywhere...grin). I have a Poser saying (well, it's a ripoff of another saying) that is: "He who dies with the most Poser buildings WINS!".

jade_nyc posted Fri, 30 January 2004 at 10:54 AM

'He who dies with the most Poser buildings WINS!' lol - exactly Chuck, exactly! I think both sets are going to complement each other nicely, you can never have too many buildings! lol like kayjay I'm just waiting for my 'liteluvr has uploaded a new product' message...

Crescent posted Fri, 30 January 2004 at 8:21 PM

I just got the White Chapel set and the first thing I thought when I saw this was, "Yes! I can have a full city block (or 3) between the two sets!"

richardnovak77 posted Tue, 03 February 2004 at 8:33 PM

these are fantastic. i've been looking to find something just like this for a short film. great work!

liteluvr posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 4:16 PM

Not to bore you folks with yet another image, but here's a wip image I did to test various compositions of the elements. I added some streetlights, etc. and have more in the works. Only post is the lens flares and a little dodge n burn here and there.

ChuckEvans posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 4:20 PM

Nice! Slurp! Boring us? Doubt it. At least not me. So, where did the sidewalks and streets come from? Is all that going to be included?

kayjay97 posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 4:24 PM

Very nice

liteluvr posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 7:47 PM

Everything you see here is planned for the set. The main challenges I foresee are the ones I always face... knowing when enough is enough, and then being able to sandwich it into a 25MB downloadable file.... I have 2 more buildings I want to do, and a few odds and ends accessories. I'm really walking the edge of file size vs. realism, so sometimes it's several iterations to get that balance just right. I'm guesstimating a couple more weeks till I'm ready, depending on time available, etc. I'll keep WIP shots posted as they get done. Here's the same shot only with a background and the lighting turned up.

ChuckEvans posted Fri, 06 February 2004 at 8:40 PM

Thanks for the update. Looks like a really nice package. I particularly like the realism of the moldy horse poopy in the streets here and there. Nice touch! (LOL)

liteluvr posted Fri, 13 February 2004 at 1:58 PM

I wanted to add one last building... and for some reason this one was a bear to model. I couldn't seem to get it to come out right, and ended up doing the exporting/uvmapping three times before I compromised.... anyway, this wraps up the buildings... maybe a prop or two left, and this one is done.

judith posted Fri, 13 February 2004 at 2:28 PM

Wow! How are you going to fit this all into 25M?

liteluvr posted Sat, 14 February 2004 at 6:33 PM

Just have to do the readme file, and upload it. Here's a final test render I did to see how far I could go with it. Not to bad for a dozen elements. I'm already gearing up for an alternate texture pack after re-watching "From Hell" last night. Need something with a decidedly 'darker' slant. And, it fits in a 25MB download..... ;o)

Like always... 10-15 bucks. I've had more fun doing this one than anyone oughta be allowed to have. A friend saw these images and thought they were move from the "Gangs of New York" era, which in retrospect were really the same basic time period, just on different continents.... interesting...

In development: Minipack #8 - an expansion set for #7 Minipack #9 - a further expansion of the dockside set, with a more Italian Renaissance / Venice look and feel. Greetings all... Sorry for my extended absence, but Real Life required my immediate and undivided attention while I dealt with some pressing issues.

Good news... this stuff is finally getting into the marketplace.... I took advantage of the hiatus to fix some things that I was not happy with, so the end result is better than it would have been.

Better news...
Minipack #5 (Castle Gate and Walls) is now available...
Minipack #6 and 7 are pending approval
Minipack #10 goes in today for review and testing, so give it about a week.

Again, thanks for the concern, support and emails. I was not really in a position to do much except appreciate them.

Lite
