Subject: Parenting problem; suddenly I can't do it, window frozen??

igohigh ( ) posted Sun, 01 February 2004 at 2:43 PM · edited Wed, 05 March 2025 at 1:19 AM

I think I remember someone long time ago with this as an issue but my search through threads took me back 3years and I found nothing.. Wether I double click the object (in this case a simple sword) or access via the Object menue the parenting window opens but will not allow me to scroll through it, the OK and CANCEL buttons will not respond, all I can do is click the 'X' in the upper corner to close it....? Has anyone ran into this before?? Oh, and it is effecting both Poser4 and Poser5...? Now both versions are on D: drive and I did recently format C: and performed a clean install of W2K (upgrading from Win98). Aside from this phenomina all else appears to funtion...

Hi Igo, It sounds like a small part of Poser's code may have gotten corrupted (perhaps something in the main .rsr file). I hate to say it but a clean reinstall of Poser may be what needs to be done. re: "both Poser4 and Poser5...?" Possibly because they both may use the same code (i.e., subroutine or .dll) These are just a couple of my thoughts ... maybe someone else will come along with some other ideas. cheers, dr geep ;=]

That's what I'm begining to think too. I did just notice that I have those 'mystery' *.tmp-xxxxxxx files in both P4&P5. I never saw them when I was on Win98 so I'm gonna take a chance and backup the rsr, delete them and see what Poser(s) do when I reopen. If not, guess I'll have to reinstall. This is my first attempt to build a scene since updating the OS so maybe something on the C: got lost and an install may be the only fix......oh well

Good luck and I hope you can recover with a minimum of frustration. cheers, dr geep <------------------- done there, been that! ;=[ ;=]

I have poser 4 pro pack and poser 5 installed with no problems. I have the plain poser 4 installed too, but on another harddisk.

This happens to me all the time with Poser 4 but I notice it when I've left Poser idle for too long. I can open windows but not scroll within them and can only X them out. What "fixes" this for me is simply minimizing Poser to the task bar and then maximizing again.

I haven't noticed if this cooincides with the temp files at all. Will have to pay attention to that next time.

Well, nothing seemed to be working for me so I got frustrated and just deleted them and reinstalled. I noticed I could not Uninstall cuz my new OS had no knowlege of them in the registry....that'll teach me to take short cuts. Luckily I have plenty of room on that HD so I just cut-n-pasted the Geometries, Libraries, and Texture folders and then swapped them back after reinstalling (saved days, even months there, wheeeew!) And, it Worked! I know have both Freak and V3 holding their own swords. Now to find those instructions for removing Content Paradise and I should be doing good again.

I had that exact scroll-menu freeze-up in the parenting window in P4 (PPP). It seemed to happen intermittently. Been using P5 for months, and have not noticed it occurring. If it does, I shall keep your re-installation solution in mind.

igohigh ( ) posted Mon, 02 February 2004 at 2:09 AM

Well it looks like it was only a partial fix. Partial meaning that it now let me parent the sword to the Freak's hand, close that PZ2 and open the other with V3 I had saved and parent her sword. So I thought all was well and continued on with my scene: Freak, suit of armor, sword, MilDog, dog armor (beta), ToxicAngel's length of chain....now I try to parent the chain (a CR2) to the MilDog and AGAIN the window freezes and will not allow me to parent it...? Looks like perhaps it's a memory handling issue, I have 512Meg with 2048MB total virtual and using a PIII 850 on W2K.... And this issue is mirrored in Both P4 and P5... But it does let me pose and render, just will not let me parent the darn chain to anything??!

Connatic ( ) posted Mon, 02 February 2004 at 6:28 AM

I noticed that when I have the freeze-up, it is often only the scroll-bar which locks, but I can still parent to whatever is at the top of the list. Sometimes the entire list and process locks, and can only be ended by clicking the "x" - the buttons are dead.

igohigh ( ) posted Mon, 02 February 2004 at 11:56 AM

Connatic; that's EXACTLY what's happening to me! But the items on the top of the list are only lights and what-not, can't get to the figure's hands and such below. And yes, sometimes the only the "x" buttons work, sometimes the other two are dead. What's your system's stats (OS/CPU/RAM/VirtualMem)? I am begining to think it's some sort of memory handling issue as this NEVER happened to me on Win98 with the same amount of memory (512Meg) but less virtual... Dr.Geep suggested to me to use the Hirarchy Editor, it should be a work around but I would love to solve the initial problem..

Connatic ( ) posted Mon, 02 February 2004 at 8:03 PM

I use WinXPhome/P4 1.8ghz/512mbRAM/VM maxxed out. I do suspect it is a RAM issue. Maybe some form of cross-talk? I will stay vigilant to see if it occurs in P5, which I now use exclusively for 2 months.

igohigh ( ) posted Mon, 02 February 2004 at 11:44 PM

I have a feeling by comparing your system with mine that it may have to do with the handeling of the VRam. We both have the same amount of physical ram (512) which is rather low for XP but should be min for W2K, your processor is more powerful then mine, but we have both maxed out out VRam.... Mine has experianced it with both P4 and P5....hmmmm, drat it all, my rendering is Much faster but if I can't parent props, let alone characters, it makes it harder to get to the point of pushing that button..
