Top one has more contrast and I like that.

Number one. It has a stronger structure in and of itself.
The second one may be more useful as a backdrop to another image, layered over it--as it's more diffuse or smoky looking.

The top one. The blacker background makes the image jump out at you more. Highlights the rest of the pic.
