I am thinking of upgrading my computer. So I thought I would ask for people's recommendations. I'm not looking for a laptop or a Mac. So what should I get...what video cards have hissee fits over Poser? Help me out folks-please-thanks Kirsten

As far as I know, all graphics cards work equally well (or equally poorly) with Poser 5. No noteworthy compatibility issues, unlike DAZ|Studio. Until Curious Labs adds hardware acceleration to Poser's feature set somewhere down the road, you won't see any performance benefits by investing in the latest, most expensive 3D card. So unless you plan to use other 3D software on this computer, there's no need to spend a fortune on the card. Any midrange product from ATI or Nvidia with enough video memory to support your highest desired screen resolution should be sufficient.

I also use Bryce, Vue and Carrera. So what else should I be asking for to kick graphic butt? I know I should get as much memory as I can...but anything else?

A large and reasonably fast hard drive which will be filled all too soon, a CD or DVD burner for backups and archiving, and the fastest CPU you can afford.

A 3.2GHz Pentium 4 can be had for about $300, an Athlon XP 3200+ for about $200.

If you like building your own systems from components, Price Watch is your friend.

Little Dragon pretty much covered it. Win2k operating system and 1GB of Ram is about the only thing I could add. Since I do a lot of video/animation stuff, I would probably insist on a motherboard with firewire, or a video card that has NTSC or S-Video outputs, also. Hmm. I think I'll put together a "ultimate" system and offer it for sale.

just a thought, it sure is nice to have a dvd burner for backing up all your poser, bryce, vue and everything else, rather than searching through countless cd's. It makes finding and organizing much easier...sure interested in how much that ultimate system is gonna cost, I'll get my dream system one day :) I'm terrified to even open my computer up and look inside, that's why i got an external dvd burner(backpack-works great and fast with usb2)

Any time you search the net for best prices, don't forget to check the reliability of the merchant. A lot of the lowest prices are from companies that aren't interested in selling products, but charging credit cards and holding onto the money for a few months. The lowest priced merchants, selling digital cameras, are infamous for such practices unless the customer opts to buying an overpriced accessory kit (which sometimes is just the normal items packed with the camera).

ya.... I'm putting together my dream machine tomorrow... AMD 64 3200+ MB...Nforce 3 150 1 gig pc3200 ram... mid level radeon 9600XT video...can't afford the ultimate dream card...plus at this level, I doubt it really matters all that much anyway... got an 8x DVD burner to back up those many gigs of Poser stuff..and images.... my HD is 100 gig, with a secondary 40 gig...but after backing up stuff and deleting, I'll have plenty of room.... The cash flow is a bit high for this system, however, but under $1k...you can buy a very fast system for around $600 for sure...I figured the 64bit processor will keep me in the game at least for a couple of years..as long as there are any 64 bit programs that ever come out :) My current system is 2 years old...amd 1800+...which is actually plenty fast, but faster is always better...I think ???
