Work got in the way for a while, but I'm back on the case - at least for an hour or two - at 3.30 a.m! Is it cheating to ask for some help on a challenge work? Only I'm bothered if I can find a reference for how the rear sight attatches to the bracketery shown here. Good night. John

Looking good! I don't think it's cheating to ask for help, I know nothing about guns but there's plenty here who do. What gun is it? - Baz

Nope, it's not cheating at all. As long as ya do things yerself, there's no harm in taking a few suggestions for improvement from others or for help with references.

I have a book on guns at home but I'm in the middle of getting dressed for work. I'll scan a few images in for you when I get home tonight to help you figure out the sight. If someone can help out before then, please do.

It's an AK series..can't see enough to be sure, but pretty dang good so far. I think there's a slight flange outward on the fire selector lever (safe/semi/full auto) there, but the rear part of the block (just above the stock) I think is more rounded..not sure about the sight..
I have a book (alas, in storage) that has a four-page pullout on the AK-47..
just a thought, I haven't checked, but for military stuff, the Jane's books are pretty informative, they might have a web site..(have some naval Janes books, that's their specialty, but dangit, they're in storage too..;) They're called things like Janes Book of Naval Armament, etc.

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

Ok. I'm back. Sorry about that. long day. I have two books, I think one of them is a JANE book and Pakled, you're right, they are very detailed. Getting my book out and scanning. Be back soon.

Teyon, hope you're not still scanning on my account! I think I'm going to call this finished now. There's still about 1,000 rivets, roll pins, split pins, screws and probably staples missing - but I'm going to run out of February if I carry on :)

Packled, the block is nothing like rounded enough as I was imagining it to be made from machined castings, not rather tatty looking pressings as I now realise it is. Now I've found a web site with some detailed images, and seen how many variants there've been, I think it's just going to have to be an AK-47(ish).
