Do you think this is overkill for her claws? As modeled, these amount to 200 polygons per claw, and with her four-digit hands the total is 1600 polys for the claws alone (the plantigrade feet won't have claws). By comparison, Victoria 3's nails average about 234 polys apiece.
I don't know if the claws would ever feature prominently in anyone's renders, so is this level of detail necessary? Opinions?
Incidentally, the design is patterned after a black bear's.
Tashar59 posted Mon, 23 February 2004 at 7:04 AM
Could you make them as a separate prop? Those that want to use them can. Would save on original size.
Little_Dragon posted Mon, 23 February 2004 at 7:14 AM
Smart-props? I hadn't considered that possibility. Thanks. Would make it a bit difficult to control the claw morphs, though; you'd have to select each individual claw, rather than having a master dial in Body to extend them all simultaneously. Perhaps as a conformer ....

think these will work with m2 or m3, i've been wanting claws, very nice job
SpottedKitty posted Mon, 23 February 2004 at 3:14 PM
Nope, IMHO not overkill at all -- they look great. In fact I have a few ideas for pics using Mia and/or the Second Nature figures that really would need a realistic set of claws to look good. The standard long-fingernail morphs just don't cut it.
Urg. Did I really say that...?
Would it be possible to have the smart-propped claws (if you decide to do it that way) useable with standard Vicky or Posette hands? (I think that's what Mia and the Second Nature critters have.) Would it just be a matter of re-parenting each claw to its fingertip, or is something more complicated involved?
One more idea -- wouldn't smartprops give us the option of setting up claws in the toes as well, if we want?
Looking forward to seeing Furrette 2...

I think you could cut the polygon count a bit in the straighter section near the base. Look at the wireframe; there's not much change in the bit between the base-bulge and the start of the curving. As a prop, or whatever, you should be able to do a low-res claw as well. Most of the time, I doubt anyone would see the difference.
Little_Dragon posted Mon, 23 February 2004 at 5:19 PM
Yes, SpottedKitty; I could make conformers or props for Posette and Vicky. DAZ already sells something similar in its Cat Character package for Victoria 2.
I'll post some preview pics of Furrette 2.0 shortly. I haven't finished putting together all the pieces, and I'm still UV-mapping everything while converting from triangles to quads, but the modeling itself is complete, and I can share a few wireframes and untextured renders.
I'm hoping to keep the polycount under 20000, but I have yet to attach the head, tail, and fur, and I have no idea at this time how much that will add.

I basically scrapped the original mesh (which had its beginnings as a crude, low-res player model for the computer game Half-Life) and built a new mesh from scratch. By using the original as a visual reference during the creation process, I could ensure that the new figure has the same proportions and measurements.

My modeling skills have improved considerably over the years. It helps, though, that I'm specifically building the new version for Poser.
These shots of the body do not show the transmapped fur layers that I'll be adding later.

Planned items include a t-shirt, trousers, shorts, and footwear. Here's an example of the boots, currently in development ....

Not to look a gift critter in the nouth (especially when it comes with sharp fangs), but I thought that this version would have digitigrade legs? Did I misunderstand? She looks good, regardless, but I really need the backwards knees. Carolly

Initial release will be plantigrade, with the digitigrade option to follow.

Wouldn't a full body suit (like a cat suit) be fatal to a bi-pedal creature completely covered in fur? I mean, they don't sweat. At least indoors, the thermostat could be lowered to make it comfortable, but then the humans would freeze. Wouldn't they would prefer a minimal amount of clothing?
Don't sweat the petty things, and don't pet the sweaty things! ; )
Little_Dragon posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 3:01 AM
That issue comes up occasionally among furry artists. It usually boils down to fashion and style vs. practicality and comfort.
In the comic strip Freefall, one of the main characters was raised by humans and thus has been instilled with their cultural mores concerning modesty. Also, she's a ship's engineer, so she needs a form-fitting jumpsuit for its protective qualities against hazardous work conditions.
If you really want to have some fun, try asking members of the furry community about the pros and cons of footwear ....
For Poser, however, the catsuit is an essential utility, as it can be transmapped to create a wide variety of clothing.

Does this mean we'll have a good looking Florence AmBrose ? I can't wait to start working on some pics of her :) Did I also recall correctly ? I think in a much earlier thread there was reference to a possible equine-based anthro. Was I correct there ?
hauksdottir posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 4:00 AM
I'll be patient. Really. I agree about the cat suit being needed... transmapped you can get wreathes of leaves or leather straps or anything spaced out so that sweating isn't an issue. It gives flexibility to create clothing across body parts. Puss in Boots was so distinctive because he did wear shoes. ;^) Thanks! Carolly
Caly posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 9:17 AM
Oh, looking forward to this! :) Can I beg for a long dress as well? :) It could then be transmapped into a short skirt etc.

I also don't know if I can model a bikini; someone else might have to develop one of those.

Speaking of which, have you seen the new trailer for Shrek 2?
Here's a preview of the trousers. I haven't added pockets or belt loops yet. If anyone's ever wondered how bipeds with tails manage to put on their pants, the answer is that there's also a fastener in the back.

Ahh I only use Poser 4, so dynamic cloth wouldn't work. It's great work anyways. :)

Yes, and the Donkey's response is priceless... only ONE annoying talking animal allowed. ;^)

No, that was just the teaser ... they have a new trailer up on the site with additional footage of Ser Puss hacking up a hairball (and Donkey gets transformed into a white stallion).

LD, if you want to model a long dress, I'd be willing to take a crack at conforming it. I have had modest success before, although I may have to use some 'cheats like body handles or extra bones. Let me know! BTW, this looks like a terrifically awesome project of yours. Shogakusha
Little_Dragon posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 4:38 PM
I might take you up on that offer, shogakusha. I'll let you know in a week or so, after she's released.

Thanks for coming up with another great product and sharing it with us. Only comment in ref to poly count of claws, and clothing items that I have is: Please don't forget those of us who are still sticking with Poser 4 on lower end-system resource computers.

A suggestion - make the claws a conformer, so that yoou can put FBM's on claw length, etc...

Hey Little Dragon, Assuming you have modelled a long skirt for Furrette 2.0, my offer still stands to work to make it a conformer. Let me know! Shogakusha

It's been so quiet in regards to Furrette 2.0 for a while, is there any news on your progress Little Dragon? Catlin
