Although everthing works fine in SR4 for me, an old annoyance is back - Poser continally tries to accesss the Intenet - If you save something - Internet, if you move something - Internet, if you open a Python script - Internet - what the hell is this again ? Mungo

get a firewall like zalarm that will stop it

MungoPark posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 5:44 AM

My firewall told me that ! But its annoying that the firewall pops up continously. This was not in SR3.

randym77 posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 6:50 AM

SR3 did do that for me. Finally I just told ZoneAlarm to block it without bothering me. Poser continued to work fine. I'll probably do the same again with SR4.

Jackson posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 6:52 AM

That sounds odd. I told my firewall (Norton) to always deny POSER.EXE requests, so I never get a pop-up. Are you saying that doesn't work with sr4?

randym77 posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 6:55 AM

I think it reset when I installed SR4. My firewall is ZoneAlarm, and ZoneAlarm takes note when the file that's trying to access the Internet has changed - to guard against those worms that try to disguise themselves as legitimate Windows functions.

SAMS3D posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 7:28 AM

After I installed, I had no pop ups or trying to access anything. I told my firewall not to allow Poser to go and it didn't, even after the new update. Sharen

I simply want to know what it wants on the net ? It would be of use do do this once after startup or whatever - but so often ? Poser was not so aggressive in SR3. I blocked it now, but I will try to find out where it goes and what it does. Why should an application like Poser sniff around the net ? Okay it looks for other Poser copies on the net, this still does not explan everything. Mungo

MungoPark posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 8:52 AM

Poser opens a port and tries to access the router - it checks for the serial number and no internet access so far, but it does it more often than before. You can block it with the firewall without problems.

Jackson posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 9:04 AM

That's good to know. Thanks.

Thorgrim posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 9:55 AM

Zone alarm is very smart and it recognizes that the Poser.exe is not that same Poser.exe that was trying to access your network/internet before and it is alerting you of this.

Problem here too. I have Panda with Firewall, and on opening and on rendering I get this attempt to go to the net. Wondering why...looking for blue meanies perhaps? Up to now no further problems.

I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now I'll be mad. (Rumi)

P5 is checking the network to see if any other copies of itself are in use. If it finds another P5, it compares serial number and similar information, and if they match, it will not start. After that, it stops looking.

Mungo, maybe it's also the content room again - which you can disable. Wait until you are using it on OS X, then just create a rule in Little Snitch. Did it try to "phone home" in the first release of the OS X version?

JohnRender posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 2:02 PM

Um, I don't think the issue is whether you can block Poser's access to the Internet, but rather why is this happening in the first place?? Is CL really that paranoid that Poser has to check for another copy after every command? Why is is this checking routine even in the middle of the program? It should check once when the program starts and then let the user get to work.

ynsaen posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 2:20 PM

My experience is that it does -- once it actually reaches the nets, it stores the info n a temp file and then stops. But if it is blocked, it keeps trying.

Basically this will slow down the whole thing - so if you block it it will loose speed because its trying. On OS X I will test it what it actually does (its easier than in windows) - but I have other things to do at the moment. This was just an observation I made after installing SR4 which made me nervous. I am fed up with keeping a network going and having all this trouble again and again. Stuff like this should be made explicit by the software manufacturer. Otherwise it just binds resources. Ever had a french hardcore server on one of your machines ? Mungo

Aeneas posted Tue, 24 February 2004 at 3:12 PM

Ynsaen is right. I allowed P5 to connect, it "looked around" for some thirty seconds, and then it loaded. I closed the app and restarted: no more attempts to connect. Now let's hope the info is not stored in the temp folder as I empty that very regularly...

When I am working with Poser (SR3 - havn't got SR4 yet, waiting to see..) or any other program that doesn't need to use the net for that matter, I just unplug the net..:-)) (No ZA popups, no delays, no probs) Mind U, I'm a home user, not a pro in somewhere where all machines have to be online 24/7, so I can do it.. Cheers, Diolma

"make sure I'm not on the net while using poser" No need, since yoru running a firewall simply have it deny Poser 5 access to the internet. Problem solved and concerns assuaged.
