If someone posts a new message here and then deletes it, why isnt it just totally removed? There doesn
t seem to be much point in keeping the message here. I have accidentally clicked on deleted messages a few times and it is a nuisance, as well as the deleted stuff taking up space for nothing.

I've asked myself the same thing. But this is a question best asked in the OT Forum, or Admin Forum.
Ask me a question, and I'll give you an answer.

You have to ask the admins to delete your own deleted message. This was discussed at length several months ago, and the idea was to leave them in until asked to delete them, in order to prevent recurrences. Obviously it doesn't work as a deterrent to leave them in, because those people never bother to preview (edit) their messages prior posting them.
