one word, sir. Gravity...
thou and I, my friend, can, in the most flunkey world, make, each of us, one non-flunkey, one hero, if we like: that will be two heroes to begin with. (Carlyle)

The gap is controlled by the "Collision Offset". You can set this in the "Collision Objects" dialog box (the "Collide Against..." button).
Hope this helps,
Jeff

collision offset and collision depth... a real peice of cloth has two sides (inside and outside) and thickness. a cloth mech is composed of polygons, which mathematically have zero thickness. the collision depth and collision offset dials emulate thickness by 'extruding' the cloth inwards by the amount of collision depth units and outward by the amount of collision offset units. thus, the cloth now has a thickness of collision offset + collision depth. any specified collision object intersecting this volume will be treated as a collision. collision offset determines the distance between a cloth object and a collision object at which the collision detection begins. collision depth determines how close the cloth object must be to a collision object in order for a collision to take place. increasing this value will increase the distance at which the cloth and collision object will collide.

I make my own Hi res cloth peices in cinema and import to poser5 The cloth room rocks !!!! it alone is worth the $89 USD I paid for the P5 MAC OSX upgradebiggert posted Fri, 12 March 2004 at 10:53 AM
wait....the Cloth Simulator is optional for MAC users? ...interesting.... how about bugs? i mean...how does it compare to windows users in regards to the number of bugs? you come across any bugs yet?

Only in the sense that you don't have to upgrade to Poser 5. The cloth room is a basic part of Poser 5 on both platforms.
Fewer bugs in Poser 5 on Mac on initial release, mostly because it was done later and includes the first 3 rounds of patches from Windows. There are still some annoying bugs; I've had some crashes, and it's pretty slow in places, and a few scenes seem to cause the Firefly renderer to just give up and render black for half the image.
But the hair and cloth rooms are awesome. Not that cloth couldn't be improved a lot. It ought to be able to resolve initial position collisions on its own, for example; which would be really nice when moving clothes from one character to another.
But with a long flowing dress, dynamic hair, and a wind generator... it definitely makes the upgrade more than worth the cost and occasional hassles.
