This is a topic I have raised myself elsewhere. It's interesting to see how people occasionally need a change of identity. I know one case of someone who posts here who originally used a name containing an obscenity (on another site, natch) and had to clean up his nick when he joined Renderosity. What motivates people to change? It would be interesting to know all the reasons.

TrekkieGrrrl posted Wed, 17 March 2004 at 5:39 AM
Well, when I joined a Real Life Star Trek club several years ago, I needed a Star Trek name. Since I am supposed (in Star Trek relations) to be bajoran, I chose/made up the name Ern Yoka. At the same time it actually MEANS something else: Yoka was a tag I used in my youth to... er... uhm.. scribble on walls and such.... Like Joker, just very badly spelled. Ern means "The Clever One" in ancient nordic so I thought that would be appropriate GG When I originally joined renderosity, I simply used my, at that time wellestablished web-handle ernyoka. Soon after, I found out I had forgotten the password, and had to make a new one, ernyoka1. But again, this is my Star Trek name and this wasn't a Star Trek site. So I started using TrekkieGrrrl to sign my pics and free stuff and only THEN found out - after about 50 freebies - that it was very confusing with 2 names here. I THINK a lot of people are aware that ernyoka1 and TrekkieGrrrl is the same person, I announce it at any given chance L and if it was possible to migrate all my stuff, including my store, to my TrekkieGrrrl handle here, I would do so this very instance. But I'm ALSO Ern Yoka. I wouldn't like to abandon that name totally. ~Lisbeth (and that's my RL name)

I have a seperate handle that I use to post naughty pics... on other sites but I'm not giving that out. :p On a side note I also play online games as Berserga, or sometimes GI Doh! so if you run into somebody with those nicks in a game of UT 2k4 or Battlefield 1942 it's probably me. :D

Xenophon was an ancient Greek military general-hero/philosopher/historian. To discuss his entire life and times would go well beyond the scope of this forum.
Here is a brief synopsis:
*Xenophon, 431-350 BCE, Athenian historian.
Xenophon served as a young man in the cavalry in the war between Athens and Sparta, after which he became a student of Socrates. Distrustful of democracy (a feeling later exacerbated after Socrates' death), he left Athens when democracy was reestablished in 410 BCE. For some years he served as a mercenary under the Persian prince Cyrus, leading a force of Greeks known as the Ten Thousand in wars in the Near East, which he described in his Anabasis. Later he served the Spartan king Agesilaus II, at witnessed the Battle of Coronea at which Sparta destroyed his native city of Athens. For his service to the enemy, Athens banished Xenophon from the city. The banishment was revoked when Athens and Sparta united against the common Theban enemy in 365 BCE, and Xenophon returned to Athens where he spent the rest of his life.
In addition to the Anabasis, Xenophon wrote three works in which he defended Socrates (the Apology, the Symposium, and the Memorabilia), and a treatise on the education of a prince called the Cyropaedia.*
I have a deep interest in ancient history.
I am not Greek, nor am I of Greek descent. Nor do I agree with the real Xenophon's thinking on many issues.
I simply like the way that the name sounds.

Well, in the Poser/art community, I've always been elizabyte, a play on my middle name (Elizabeth, obviously). In web design circles, I go by Alicorna, which is the name of my business. Alicorna is Italian for unicorn, with a specifically feminine gender (the masculine would be "alicorno"). And in talker (MUD) communities, I'm generally known as Duchess, uhm.... just because. I think it had something to do with the mad duchess in Alice in Wonderland, and also something to do with the Duchess of York (Fergie), but it's been so many years I honestly can't remember the specifics of why I chose it. And, of course, I do go by my own (first) name, which is Bonni (yes, that's it, yes, that's how it's spelled ;-). I generally sign posts and emails with all lower case letters because that's how I sign my hand-drawn pictures/paintings, and I've done so since about 1978 (long before it was trendy). bonni <-- Like that. ;-)

I am, and always have been, Batronyx. My first venture into the online world was on AOL back in '94/'95 (somewhere in there) and I had to choose a screen name. All of the variations on my real name required a number stuck on the end ( yuck! I didn't want to be the 4377th bbowen ). My first cat was a black one named Onyx. Several of my interests seem to be associated with bats ( mostly Batman and various vampires ) so I stuck 'em together. I also liked the way it rhymed with 'electronics', further reflecting my interests in all things technical. I made a logo of sorts you can see on my artist page that further reflects these interests.
I've also had batronyx.com since '96 but don't break your neck to get over there or anything. It's been mostly a vanity thing as it's never been attached to an IP address until this year and I still haven't done much with it, although I have a few plans, including a couple of freebies I've been working on and the requisite gallery. ;)

hm, I started out as black_canary (like the comic book heroine) and since my real name's mary, that sort of morphed to MaryCanary, as a sig line anyway, so then I signed up a few places as just "canary." Meanwhile I had a yahoo id, chandracrater, taken from some SF stories I was writing at the time. So when poser finished eating every second of the time I used to spend writing, I figured I'd get a new yahoo id that matched up to my forum id's so I wouldn't have to keep explaining why I was chandracrater@yahoo.com! but someone already had "canary@yahoo.com" so I went for canary3d@yahoo.com and registered www.canary3d.com. But I was still black_canary here, which didn't match, so I signed up as canary3d here as well and have used that at other forums since then. Wow, that's a whole saga! A really boring one :) -Mary

Just plain old melanie everywhere because my name really is Melanie and it's the easiest for me to remember (I suffer from Menopausal Blonde Disorder), although a couple of places I've been jonica after a character in a book I wrote a few years ago. Melanie

At Rosity and most other places I'm CyberscapE. I got this name from an old college radio show in Atlanta,GA. They used to play industrial/goth/synthpop music. I also use this name for my music projects where I create techno/industrial tracks on my computer. And I also use it for DJing in clubs. Other names in the past: fudleybutt (my Dad's name for his dog) ogre69 (the year of my birth combined with the name of the lead singer of Skinny Puppy-a Canadian noise band) Present names elsewhere: spankthegriffen (my handle in some chatrooms) nobody's_drool (a yahoo name) I sign my renders with boReeL, which is a backwards spelling for my childhood nickname - Lee Rob.

Been Fauve here since 1997. Before that I was Nemo (for Little Nemo, after the Winsor McKay comic strip) but during one of the very early Poser Forum site upgrades my nick somehow got "lost" and I couldn't re-register it, so I switched to Fauve. And Anton, it's still so difficult for me to remember that your nick isn't akisiel any more. :)
