Haven't touched it in a year and a half, but I used to have a lot of MTG cards - and cards for about a dozen other games (Illuminati - New World Order, Animehem, Over The Edge, a fantasy RPG one that I don't remember the name of, a Christian one I was GIVEN a set of cards for at GenCon a few years ago, and Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail, to name a few...). I'm surprised no challenges relating to these have surfaced previously, to be honest!
I can see at least three ways to take this, but don't know if George is thinking of one of them or something else - 1) Create new cards for an existing game 2) Re-produce an existing card (could lead to copyright problems, but could be the most fun too...) 3) Create cards for a similar game, either a non-existent one or one of our own devising...

Well it seems there are 3 of us interested in this challenge...maybe:O) As far as copyrights go CharlieBrown as long as you don't try and sell the "card" image or represent it as an official Magic the Gathering card youwill be fine. The "card" is a parody for use as entertainment purposes only. here's an example...look how I labled the bottom. Here's my idea for the challenge. If you guys like it and wish to take part in it post your task after reading this. Create a "Maagic the Gathering" card. Each of us will come up with a "Magic" style card name. ie Gremlin Infilitrator. The name must be one never used in the game. We will assign that name to a person, and that person in turn creates a full card based off the name. Since at this time there are 3 of us we must give a name to the person who did NOT give us one. so all 3 of us can take part in this challenge. Tools used - anything needed! For an added plus I found this small program which will save TONS of time called Dante's Card Maker. You can make any color card, it has all the mana symbols, numbers and is real easy to use. Just add the text you want and add your image. you can get it here: http://members.nbci.com/Modular444/ GeorgeDSounds kind of cool - I remember a contest a while back in one of the magazines my brother had (I don't remember if it was Scrye or Duelist) like this, kind of... My favorite entry was "Baby in a Blender" The image showed just that - a happy, smiling baby seated calmly inside of a food processor. The card had a 0 colorless mana cost, and had only one effect: "Play this card to gross out your opponent"
George, "What the hell..." I'm a sysop on CompuServe, in the TradingCards Forum, where we play Magic online, among other things. I'd never address a new member with an off-putting remark like that. But my job is to foster community, not chase it away. What I meant was that there are some Magic artists who go for gross-out ugliness, and there are others who create some beautiful images. As John Gardner wrote, we as artists have a responsibility not to add any more ugliness to the world. There are artists besides Anson to mimic, you know! But if you give topics such as "Festering Cheese" the odds are very good that the resultant art will show decay and corruption and those other things that Anson and his buddies relish. I have been playing Magic since December '93, and miss the work of Quinton and Margaret and Rob and Kaja. It is all comicbook stuff, now. Pity. Carolly
{What I meant was that there are some Magic artists who go for gross-out ugliness, and there are others who create some beautiful images.} This is all in fun; whichever way the card-maker wants to run with it they may - gross, silly, artistic, or some combination (I'll try for a combination myself, but it will probably wind up just being silly...). And I have to agree that the cards have gotten more cartoony/comic-book like in the recent runs (since whatever came out just before Unglued, in fact). Incidentally, Carolly/hauksdottir if you're interested, please feel free to cover Hoborg's slack and take up my challenge! :-)
hauksdottir, Your first post can be read in more ways than one. With the limited statement you made with no explanation behind it it did seem rather rude. Not knowing me like most here do...I'm into seeing humerous stuff done with some imagination. If I gave out a card name such as lets say "Dark Rider" ...well we'd just get another Magic card. Sure the art might be great and even the text in it decent but it would still be a plain card non the less. With a name like "Festerng Cheese" the artist 1) has to use their imagination to create an interesting image to fit the name. Either as you say gross, funny, or even normal "Magic" looking. 2) The imagination takes a 2nd step and has to give it something to do, either as a creature, artifact, enchantment, etc. I started this challenge to get some new stuff that hasn't been done here before. The "What the hell" part..well as with your message it can be read more than one way and I'm sorry you read it the wrong way. I just wanted to know what you meant by your statement. BTW...I also have played Magic since it's Beta release. Still to this day I enjoy the old art over some of the new but in turn some of the new out does some of the old. You can't tell me that Stasis has a cool picture...no one can say that:OP GeorgeD
We play Magic. I'm having a heck of a time finding someone who's willing to sell me some Beta commons for a collection for my husband for Christmas! They're too expensive on eBay! Scrye and Top Deck says Beta commons are worth $1.00 each (or less) but I've seen a common go for $3 to $10! Sheesh! :( And never mind finding an unopened pack of Beta ROFLMAO Sounds like a fun challenge! We've actually made up quite a few cards, just a matter of doing some artwork for them :)

I just want to get an idea of any of you play Magic the Gathering or any other CCG style game. I have a new idea for a real cool challenge but want to see if there's an interest for it. GeorgeD
