Subject: Magic the Gathering or other CCG fans here?

GeorgeD ( ) posted Sun, 24 September 2000 at 1:38 PM · edited Sat, 16 November 2024 at 5:59 AM

I just want to get an idea of any of you play Magic the Gathering or any other CCG style game. I have a new idea for a real cool challenge but want to see if there's an interest for it. GeorgeD

hoborg ( ) posted Mon, 25 September 2000 at 3:45 PM

I've been known to dabble. I guess that makes me a bona fide geek. Hoborg

GeorgeD ( ) posted Mon, 25 September 2000 at 4:09 PM

Ok there's one person...anyone else?

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Tue, 26 September 2000 at 12:46 PM

Haven't touched it in a year and a half, but I used to have a lot of MTG cards - and cards for about a dozen other games (Illuminati - New World Order, Animehem, Over The Edge, a fantasy RPG one that I don't remember the name of, a Christian one I was GIVEN a set of cards for at GenCon a few years ago, and Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail, to name a few...). I'm surprised no challenges relating to these have surfaced previously, to be honest!

GeorgeD ( ) posted Tue, 26 September 2000 at 12:50 PM

Well I have a few cool ideas for a challenge. I've played Magic for almost 6 years now and figured I'd incorporate my 2 favorite things...3D and Magic:) GeorgeD

hoborg ( ) posted Wed, 27 September 2000 at 3:11 PM

What did you have in mind? Maddox? I thought that the Original set (I can't stand the post-Ice-Age art) had some cool pieces. Maybe something like Anson Maddox's or Damion Willich(sp).? I don't know. Hoborg

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Wed, 27 September 2000 at 3:16 PM

I can see at least three ways to take this, but don't know if George is thinking of one of them or something else - 1) Create new cards for an existing game 2) Re-produce an existing card (could lead to copyright problems, but could be the most fun too...) 3) Create cards for a similar game, either a non-existent one or one of our own devising...

Well it seems there are 3 of us interested in this challenge...maybe:O) As far as copyrights go CharlieBrown as long as you don't try and sell the "card" image or represent it as an official Magic the Gathering card youwill be fine. The "card" is a parody for use as entertainment purposes only. here's an example...look how I labled the bottom. Here's my idea for the challenge. If you guys like it and wish to take part in it post your task after reading this. Create a "Maagic the Gathering" card. Each of us will come up with a "Magic" style card name. ie Gremlin Infilitrator. The name must be one never used in the game. We will assign that name to a person, and that person in turn creates a full card based off the name. Since at this time there are 3 of us we must give a name to the person who did NOT give us one. so all 3 of us can take part in this challenge. Tools used - anything needed! For an added plus I found this small program which will save TONS of time called Dante's Card Maker. You can make any color card, it has all the mana symbols, numbers and is real easy to use. Just add the text you want and add your image. you can get it here: http://members.nbci.com/Modular444/ GeorgeD

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Thu, 28 September 2000 at 7:54 AM

Sounds kind of cool - I remember a contest a while back in one of the magazines my brother had (I don't remember if it was Scrye or Duelist) like this, kind of... My favorite entry was "Baby in a Blender" The image showed just that - a happy, smiling baby seated calmly inside of a food processor. The card had a 0 colorless mana cost, and had only one effect: "Play this card to gross out your opponent"

--criticom-- ( ) posted Thu, 28 September 2000 at 3:11 PM

can I enter too ? :) I've never played the game but I am familiar with it so count me in too ,please. --criticom--

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Sun, 01 October 2000 at 11:23 AM

Never played any of the card games but I have seen some. I got a few packs of the Vampire ones for the art a few years ago .. sounds interesting

GeorgeD ( ) posted Sun, 01 October 2000 at 2:05 PM

Yeah all are welcome to join it...someone just needs to start it. I would but I want to get everyone involved I can:) GeorgeD

Kosmik_hero ( ) posted Fri, 06 October 2000 at 1:24 AM

Okay...I played Magic for a few years, still have many cards laying about. This sounds like fun...I'm in too... This is my first challenge so tell me how this works exactly...

GeorgeD ( ) posted Fri, 06 October 2000 at 10:26 AM

Well we just need someone to start if off. I guess I will then. Since CharlieBrown posted to this the most I Challenge him. Your card title to work on is: Festering Cheese CharlieBrown...your turn to Challenge someone now:) Have fun:O) GeorgeD

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Fri, 06 October 2000 at 12:09 PM

"Festering Cheese"? ROFL! I may have to go out and hunt down stills from the Presidential Debate to do THIS justice ;-) Hmm... OK... Let's pass this down to Hoborg: "Dread Fishmonger"

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 09 October 2000 at 8:37 AM

Well, I'd be interested... but it looks like you guys are going for gross. :( There is enough ugly art in the world already.

GeorgeD ( ) posted Mon, 09 October 2000 at 11:28 AM

What the hell is that supposed to mean?

shadowcat ( ) posted Mon, 09 October 2000 at 11:20 PM

I am new to renderosity and 3d art, but I've played more than my share of magic. Can I participate? (how do I participate)

GeorgeD ( ) posted Tue, 10 October 2000 at 12:55 AM

CharlieBrown...since Hoborg hasn't taken up on it could you pass it to someone else? For those new to this type of challenge. When you get the card name assigned by someone..you inturn pick someone ad give them a name. Make up something good too:O) GeorgeD

hauksdottir ( ) posted Tue, 10 October 2000 at 1:31 AM

George, "What the hell..." I'm a sysop on CompuServe, in the TradingCards Forum, where we play Magic online, among other things. I'd never address a new member with an off-putting remark like that. But my job is to foster community, not chase it away. What I meant was that there are some Magic artists who go for gross-out ugliness, and there are others who create some beautiful images. As John Gardner wrote, we as artists have a responsibility not to add any more ugliness to the world. There are artists besides Anson to mimic, you know! But if you give topics such as "Festering Cheese" the odds are very good that the resultant art will show decay and corruption and those other things that Anson and his buddies relish. I have been playing Magic since December '93, and miss the work of Quinton and Margaret and Rob and Kaja. It is all comicbook stuff, now. Pity. Carolly

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Tue, 10 October 2000 at 9:43 AM

{What I meant was that there are some Magic artists who go for gross-out ugliness, and there are others who create some beautiful images.} This is all in fun; whichever way the card-maker wants to run with it they may - gross, silly, artistic, or some combination (I'll try for a combination myself, but it will probably wind up just being silly...). And I have to agree that the cards have gotten more cartoony/comic-book like in the recent runs (since whatever came out just before Unglued, in fact). Incidentally, Carolly/hauksdottir if you're interested, please feel free to cover Hoborg's slack and take up my challenge! :-)

GeorgeD ( ) posted Fri, 13 October 2000 at 10:39 PM

Looks like we hit a dead end again CharlieBrown:( GeorgeD

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Tue, 17 October 2000 at 12:19 PM

Well... I downloaded the program to make a card, but the first time it crashed; I'll have to see if last night's attempt worked better than the first one - THEN I'll start working on the image for it... MAYBE by then SOMEONE else will have either joined in or returned... ;-)

GeorgeD ( ) posted Tue, 17 October 2000 at 12:39 PM

hauksdottir, Your first post can be read in more ways than one. With the limited statement you made with no explanation behind it it did seem rather rude. Not knowing me like most here do...I'm into seeing humerous stuff done with some imagination. If I gave out a card name such as lets say "Dark Rider" ...well we'd just get another Magic card. Sure the art might be great and even the text in it decent but it would still be a plain card non the less. With a name like "Festerng Cheese" the artist 1) has to use their imagination to create an interesting image to fit the name. Either as you say gross, funny, or even normal "Magic" looking. 2) The imagination takes a 2nd step and has to give it something to do, either as a creature, artifact, enchantment, etc. I started this challenge to get some new stuff that hasn't been done here before. The "What the hell" part..well as with your message it can be read more than one way and I'm sorry you read it the wrong way. I just wanted to know what you meant by your statement. BTW...I also have played Magic since it's Beta release. Still to this day I enjoy the old art over some of the new but in turn some of the new out does some of the old. You can't tell me that Stasis has a cool picture...no one can say that:OP GeorgeD

GeorgeD ( ) posted Tue, 17 October 2000 at 12:42 PM

Cool CB. Lets hope. Lack of participation in a forum usually shuts it down. With all the challenges posted in here I was hoping to see something posted. GeorgeD

okay... I haven't been given a challenge so I created this as a test of Dante's Card Maker... Someone give me a challenge...

GeorgeD ( ) posted Tue, 17 October 2000 at 3:04 PM

Why not do CharlieBrown's challenge. No one has taken that one up as far as I know. Then just asign a name to someone else who posted interest. GeorgeD

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Tue, 17 October 2000 at 3:05 PM

Since you're in the spirit of things, Kosmik, here's the challenge I gave Hoborg after I was challenged - feel free to take it up, since Hoborg hasn't returned yet... Create the following card: "Dread Fishmonger"

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Tue, 17 October 2000 at 3:09 PM

Jinx! ;-)

Kosmik_hero ( ) posted Tue, 17 October 2000 at 4:07 PM

Alright... I'm not sure about Dread Fishmonger, but I'll give it a shot. And, to Shadowcat: Create the Card "Mandate of Apathy".

Here it is... Be gentle, this is my first attempt at creature creation. I realize this could have been a witty, smart-assed card, but I decided to try my hand at a creature instead. I still plan on making it better...

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Wed, 18 October 2000 at 12:31 PM

Cute idea... I really need to work on mine (I'll probably do it Sunday when my wife is at work(!))

Sanctuary ( ) posted Sun, 22 October 2000 at 1:33 AM

I'll do a card. Just give me the name, the more off the wall the better!

mythris ( ) posted Tue, 31 October 2000 at 9:14 PM

I think it's a great idea for a challenge, I've played Magic since it started. And I still play a little, I mostly collect.

tbsro ( ) posted Sat, 18 November 2000 at 12:44 AM

We play Magic. I'm having a heck of a time finding someone who's willing to sell me some Beta commons for a collection for my husband for Christmas! They're too expensive on eBay! Scrye and Top Deck says Beta commons are worth $1.00 each (or less) but I've seen a common go for $3 to $10! Sheesh! :( And never mind finding an unopened pack of Beta ROFLMAO Sounds like a fun challenge! We've actually made up quite a few cards, just a matter of doing some artwork for them :)

Thanatos ( ) posted Thu, 07 December 2000 at 11:39 PM

This sounds like fun I played magic for a while and still have about six boxes of cards laying round. DO YOUR WORST SIR GEORGE D.

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Fri, 08 December 2000 at 8:31 AM

Thanatos, tbsro, I haven't been able to finish the challenge given to me, and nobody picked up the one I issued; why don't one of you pick either of these and "go to town"? :-)

Thanatos ( ) posted Fri, 08 December 2000 at 3:19 PM

What festering cheese or dread fishmonger? Festering cheese never really got a go so I'll give it a try.

CharlieBrown ( ) posted Fri, 08 December 2000 at 3:29 PM

Either one! I was supposed to do the Festering Cheese - and still might - but the program never worked right and I've been too lazy to assemble it by hand...

Thanatos ( ) posted Fri, 08 December 2000 at 3:54 PM

WEll i went to that nbci site to get the card maker. And failed. Is there something permenently f*&#;$D with those nbci sites I can never ever get in to them.

Thanatos ( ) posted Sat, 09 December 2000 at 1:02 AM

Can Some One please email me Dante's card maker as I have been unsuccessful in getting it from the site mentioned above. xThanatosx@hotmail.com
