Ah, it looks like the administrators finally got verification from Michael Imrie. And who is Imrie? He's the talented modeler of a TARDIS model I'ved adapted for use in Poser. It was originally meant for a specific project, but it turned out well enough that I asked Imrie for permission to distribute the adapted mesh and textures. He was kind enough to grant it. I used UV Mapper Pro to optimize the mesh so flat surfaces with sharp edges would render properly. It even retained the original .3DS mapping coordinates so that Imrie's moss weathered textures could still be used. Note: I forgot to scale the model before zipping it. Just expand the global scale to 150-160 percent depending upon the figures you use. The DAZ Mil' figures are slightly taller than "Posette" and "Dork". Let's see those "Doctor Who" images to "ring in" the upcoming series' revival! Sincerely, Bill

Not bad, but you may want to start with an obj model... the 3ds file may be built with triangles, which may not be best for this square model. But, I suppose we can never have too many TARDIS models, what with my version and Geralday's version already in the Free Stuff section. Let's see people making stuff that isn't available, like some good Cybermen or Sontaran models. Or better yet, how about making all 8 Doctors using Mike 3? --John

Upcoming series revival? Of the old series or new ones? I haven't heard of this. Tell me more. By the way, that's a really great looking TARDIS!!! Melanie

Ah, JHoagland, I'm glad you piped in. I hope you don't see this as an encroachment upon your territory. If it bothers you, I'll be willing to remove it from general release. Actually, I wanted to spruce up a scene I had originally rendered for my R'osity gallery and submit it to an "image of the month" contest at the Who3D forums. I was actually searching for textures when I remembered Imrie's Dalek site. I downloaded his model and was stunned by his weathered textures dappled with moss. I requested Mapper (a fellow R'osity member) to translate the model into .OBJ format and I imported the modified file into UV Mapper Pro. My plan was to merely take care of those annoying smoothing and shading issues caused by Poser. Little did I suspect it would preserve the original mapping of the .3DS version. Yes, it's triangulated, but you can't tell when rendering it, even without the textures. Again, if you are possibly concerned by its introduction, I'll remove it. Sincerely, Bill

Melanie, have you been imprisoned on Skaro?! Next year, 2005, the BBC will start airing all new episodes of "Doctor Who" starring Chris Eccleston as the wayward Time Lord. It will be produced by BBC Wales and will consist of thirteen 45 minute segments. How many of those will be 2 and 3 parters remains unknown at this time. At this time the BBC is negotiating with Terry Nation's estate to obtain permission to use the Daleks. Nation , as you may know, managed a separate agreement for the Daleks so that he would get royalties whenever they were used. Details such as the apperance of the TARDIS, the console room and the Doctor's attire have not yet been revealed. Just click the link to the official BBC site for all the details. Enjoy! Now is the model bigger on the inside than the outside? Sorry... couldn't resist that :)

Thank you. That is a very nice police box. Even if one doesn't need a TARDIS, one might still need a weathered old station for damper places in the countryside. Carolly

JHoagland, concerning other "Whovian" related items and charcters, you do have a very good point. I had taken an informal survey to find out which of the various TARDIS consoles they'd like to have available as Poser props. The majority voted for something akin to the consoles used from the beginning ("Unearthly Child") through the serial just before "The 5 Doctors". A couple of replies suggested the stained wood writing pedestal and one wanted the Fox movie version. Anyway, I started to model one and got so far as detailing 2 of the 5 panels with buttons and knobs before my real life voaction ran me ragged. I will get back to it and make it available as a prop for all. A Sontaran? Hmm, I could see that done with the "Freak". The trick would be to use magnets and stretch the lower portions of his haed and jaw wider and then hid the chin with a helmet ring. One could debate the number of fingers, but I think Styre from Baker's third story had 4 fingers and a thumb on each hand. A Cyberman? Model a prop helmet and and other accessaries and parent them to the figure of your choice. A custom figure would be, of course, more authentic, but look at the various super-heroes based upon standard Poser figures at Animotions. Quite servicable. Anybody have some good plan drawings of cyber-helmets (whatever era)? Sincerely, Bill

A quick and crude example using the "Freak" to create a Sontaran. I simply scaled his head, tapered it, loaded a cylinder to suggest the helmet ring and applied the DAZ zombie texture. Imagine what could be achieved given more time. Sincerely, Bill

A few years ago I modelled both a Mark I and and Mark VI Cyberman from pics found at this site.

EVERYTHING you need to know about Cybermen.

Although I imagine Mr. Davies will be re-writting the history part soon. Not looking forward to what he's going to do with the series.

RKDS, thanks for reminding me of that site. I stumbled across it some time ago, but I never bothered to save the URL. It does provide some very good photo references, to be sure. However, I was searching for something akin to technical illustrations showing at least the front and side views. There is the Mark IV Cyberman (and a few earlier incarnations) printed within the "Doctor Who Technical Manual", but the drawings have the helmet tilted upwards. True, I can simply rotate the side view, but that won't help with the face-on shot. I guess I could put my own "spin" on them, taking a few artistic licenses as the illustrators of the on-line adventure, "Real-Time", did. Still, I suspect people will desire "canon" recreations, exactly replicating the costumes from the original BBC television series. Still, that site is a valuable resource! Thanks! Sincerely, Bill

Well then, you could check the Dr. Who Image Gallery at http://www.shillpages.com/dw/dwia.htm tons of screen caps from each ep, you might find one there. Or you could check Dr. Who's Tragical History Tour at http://drwhotht.phenominet.com/ which has production shots from each ep. If none of these has what you're looking for, let me know which Cyberman version you're looking to model and I'll send you some screen caps (I have every episode). It's the least I can do for making your TARDIS available. Regards, Ryan

Actually, I was speaking hypothetically, suggesting one possible solution for creating a Poser "friendly" Cyberman. My skills at modeling curved objects is somewhat, er, lacking. I meant that whomever had those skills to model "cyber technology" could import the finished items (helmet, chest mountings, shoulder pads, etc.) into Poser and parent them to an existing figure's body parts like the head and chest. One could use "Dork" and fit him with one of Anthony Appleyard's wetsuits to help recreate the Mark IV Cybermen from "The Invasion" and "Revenge of the Cybermen". One need not have to model an entire figure and "rig" the joints with Phi Builder or the Poser 5 Character Setup "room". On another subject, this prop is not "my" TARDIS. Please understand Michael M. Imrie did all the original modeling and texture "painting". I merely optimized his mesh within UV Mapper Pro so that it would render decently within Poser. That's why I labeled the thumbnail "Imrie's TARDIS". He was gracious enough to let me distribute HIS model in a Poser ready format. The last thing I want is for people to think I am laying claim to another person's work. Still, I accept the compliment in the spirit intended. Sincerely, Bill

Bill, thanks for the link. I guess I must have been lost in the Vortex or something. This is the first I've heard of it. Now I'm really excited. I only hope it'll be aired here in the States, and please not on cable, I don't have cable. Melanie

Only nit I have to pick with that TARDIS is the door don't open :-( so the Doctor or any companion can't be shown going in or coming out of it.

Why shouldn't speech be free? Very little of it is worth anything.

Redfern posted Sat, 17 April 2004 at 9:57 AM

Yeah, it merely being a static prop with a non-functional door bothers me, too. I'm using TrueSpace to try selecting the right side door polygons and rotate them 90 degrees upon their vertical axes as a group. I can, in theory, import that .OBJ into poser and save it as a morph target. I could then load that morph target to make the door swing inwards. The pain is trying to select those polygons (as well as those for the handle and lock). If anyone else feels he or she is up to the task, go for it! I'll gladly list proper credit should you be willing to let me include it in an updated package. Sincerely, Bill

Hmm, it's about three pages back now in the Poser "free stuff" section, but it's been there since the 13th. Here's a direct link to all my contributions (a meager three). Let me know if you have any problems accessing it. Sincerely, Bill

Based upon discussions in some recent threads, I've opted to play it conservatively and have removed my "Doctor Who" related free items before I may be given an official "warning". Not that it really means anything in the grand scheme of life, but I'd rather not be penalized for actions that were once deemed acceptable. There are people here I've grown to like, and there is much valued information to be utilized. If I were banned, I would no longer have access to that information or some of my friends. This does not mean I will lock away the files, never to be shared again. Rather, I will seek other venues such as other sites still willing to share fan material. I will let you know what site(s) I have selected. I will not argue Renderosity's decision. As a privately owned site, the administrators have the right to decide what is permitted and what is not (as long as it does not violate state and Federal law). And if the reasons I've been told in confidence are correct, it does make sense. I am, however, saddened that members have been given "marks" against their permanent records after the site owners allowed the "concerned" items to remain for months, if not years. Especially when there's been a "screening" process in place since April 2003. Personally, I do not think that is fair, but again I will not debate the administrators' decisions. If requested, I will remove the "DW" tributes from my gallery should the administrators deem them no longer acceptable. Again, based upon privilaged information, that day will most likely come. Sincerely, Bill

The TARDIS freebie, as well as two other "Doctor Who" items can be found at the link provided. Let us be thankful of JHoagland's generosity for offering the VanishingPoint link portal. This version is better than the one formerly offered here. Little_Dragon converted the static mesh into a character (.CR2) file with a posing part, in this case, the right side door! You can now open it! LD also included a "liner" to hide the inner geometry. By default, all material settings are black, but you can adjust them for some interesting effects. Enjoy! Sincerely, Bill
