Just went to DAZ site to see what they offer, requires login, they offer me nothing. I'm not a "member" and they're nothing but a software house, a commercial operation that doesn't want to offer me anything. Nice advertising ploy, but a failure in my case. When I have to log in to see their catalog, it's not worth the effort and added spam that will result.

Ardiva posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 11:27 AM

Sorry no "Spam" comes with your registration. They have a huge Forum as well.

Caly posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 11:39 AM

Err... they have a freebie section. And an archive of freebies. & some freebies in their forums.

You don't need a login to see their catalog.

millman posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 12:16 PM

Wasn't looking for freebies or forums, a catalog of products would have been nice, and what I was looking for. Spam also includes "newsletters" that you have to opt out of to keep from plugging your email. ("newsletter" in quotes, advertising by any other name.) Sorry if I sound pricky about it, but what ever happened to showing what you sell honestly and without having to become a (phoney) member of a (phoney) organization?

Shoshanna posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 12:19 PM

If you register with Daz (which you only need to do to actually buy stuff, download DAZ Studio or access their free archive) You get one newsletter a week which includes a link to a free Poser item (sometimes a model eg Stephanie or the Mil Dog LE, sometimes just a texture set for an existing model) and you can access their free archive which includes dozens of old weekly freebies for Poser. You also get access to their forums. They don't pass your name on to anyone else. You can also cancel the newsletter if you want. At which point you won't hear from them again. If you just want to go to thier store and window shop, no login required.

millman posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 12:19 PM

Grey_cat, when I click on "PRODUCTS", products is what I expect to see, not a login page. End of effort. My tolerance for admen and geeky sites is zero or less.

If you click on any of the images of store items, it will take you into their catalog. There are links on the left hand side to all the sections once you are in there.

Jackson posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 1:13 PM

Odd, I've never had to log in at DAZ to view their product pages. What URL are you using? Use the one Shoshanna gave and you shouldn't have that trouble.

elgyfu posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 2:33 PM

In my experience Daz are one of the most honest companies I have ever dealed with. If you are not prepared to try again (I looked at the catalog for ages before loging in) then you are missing out on more than the pleasure you are obviously gaining from being Mr Zero Tolerence man.

Grey_cat posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 2:42 PM

I don't know, when I click "PRODUCTS", I get the products page not the login page. The only ads that DAZ has on their site, is ads for the products they sell, but then again I suppose they figure that's why you came there.

maclean posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 3:10 PM

Well, when I installed the free version of Zone Alarm, I had to go to all the bother of unchecking the 'search for updates' box. Boy, that was hard work! Then there was ANOTHER box to uncheck about 'send me details on new products'. I was just about exhausted after all that.... Sorry, millman. I'm not trying to be funny at your expense. I have a slightly warped sense of humor, so just ignore me. Seriously, if you go to the DAZ store to browse, there's no obligation to do anything other than look at the pages. If however, you want free software, I suppose DAZ would like to at least keep track of how many people have taken an interest in it. That's the reason for the log-in, I guess. But it's worth it. The app works very well and you can opt out on any DAZ promos or mailshots. mac

millman posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 4:09 PM

Guess I'm just spoiled, most of my on line browsing for products is in the metalworking areas. Like McMaster-Carr, click on products and you get page one of their catalog and a search engine, which makes sense unless you want to browse more than 2000 pages of .pdf to find what you're looking for. Or Serif Software, click on "Products" and you get a drop down list of all of their products, which one do you want to look at. I'm told that what I was looking for is under "Premium" something or another, but normally when I see "Premium", it means more bucks than the regular line, and I'm not looking for that either. Not that it matters, before I was done with their site, Serif called me with an offer that I couldn't refuse for more than a few minutes, and my wad for the month is gone now. (The only way I deal with Serif is by phone anyhow, my CC number doesn't go on line at any time.) Off the topic, but I really like their Photo Plus and Page Plus 9. Halfway reasonable price, and an honest to God printed manual that actually has what you need in it, where you can even find it. (Obvious dig at Poser here.) Normal disclaimers apply.

RHaseltine posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 4:22 PM

Um - you hate ad men and newsletters, but are happy for Serif to call you on the phone?

mabfairyqueen posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 4:31 PM

millman posted Thu, 15 April 2004 at 4:45 PM

Ummm, look at their price for PagePlus 9 on line, and their offer to me, when I bought it a couple of months ago was about 10%, then tell me you wouldn't like that too. (With book, resource disk and shipping, $34 IIRC.) Forgot to mention, the book is extra, but well worth the small cost. If I don't want to talk to anyone, the phone rings off the hook and I just don't answer. And if the admen didn't figure that I had to look at everything they offer before I find what I was looking for in the first place, I might think a little better of them. Newsletters, don't give me an option to "opt out", that's backwards. If I don't select an "opt in" option, don't send it.

I click on Products & I see Products, not a login screen. Care to share the URL you followed?

well it sounds to me like your acting a little whinny and ppl also forgot to state you (with register) can make a wish list i for one have NEVER been forced to log in unless i want to access one of there extras like the freebies, forums, wishlist, beta testing. i for one love the newsletter i dont get spammed i get once a week an e-mail that lists what is new in all the catagorys a link to this weeks freebie, info on new tutorials and art in the gallery and the like the only place you HAVE to have a membership is to access the platinum club forum or to buy at PC prices. sounds like you need to go check something out fully before you go someplace and start bitching about it.

Though we're not as perfect at communication as we often wish we were, we do try very hard to give aid to our customers where possible. There are two reasons for having you register to download free items or place purchases: To be able to contact customers with product updates and other important information directly, and that of being able to keep our customers informed of what's new each week at DAZ, among that is the weekly listing of the new Free Product of the Week. The specific reasons for doing this with the BETA of D|S are the very same, it allows us to very easily get in touch with the users of our software so that we can help them stay informed of the latest releases, bug fixes, and free content. And, as Maclean stated, it makes it a bit easier to keep track of exactly how many people have downloaded, not just how many times the files have been accessed. ;) Thanks, Steve Kondris DAZ Productions, Inc.

millman posted Fri, 16 April 2004 at 1:55 AM

Steve, I wasn't looking for freebies, and if I'm going to order, I'll be talking to a human on a phone, I don't do anything on the net with my credit card. I don't like "login" more because the default for "newsletters" is never "don't send". "Premium" to me means "Pay a premium price" which might explain that I didn't look there. I get "tetchy" about it because I've had to navigate some pretty miserable sites to find things, and I won't do it anymore. If the list isn't where logic says it should be, I'm gone. Most of the sites I visit are industrial suppliers, and the first thing on their page is the search engine. I usually find what I'm looking for pretty quickly and then can go on to the special offers etc.

Actually, have al look at www.mailinator.com, if you have problems with spam from companies where you have to give an email address. They have a cost-free solution for that.

may I suggest getting a free hotmail account to use for registering at websites etc... I've had my main e-mail address for 6 years and have never gotten spam sent to it during that time because I use a hotmail account whenever I go to websites. NEVER give out your real e-mail account except to family, friends or work if you have to.

bantha posted Fri, 16 April 2004 at 4:06 AM

Mailinator is an instant email-adress without registration. Perfect for Website logins. I would call it hotmail with autodelete.

If you actually go to the front page of daz3d.com you will find that they do have a search engine at the top right. Daz also lists their phone number on the front page.

Millman, I really have no idea what the heck you are talking about, cause it doesnt get any simpler than http://www.daz3d.com/ Products, search, support, etc etc, all right there on the front page, with no registration required, just like you say you want.
