Subject: Mystery bandwidth

Varian ( ) posted Tue, 27 April 2004 at 12:55 AM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 1:52 AM

This has been puzzling me for awhile, and since I just uploaded a new image I'm reminded about this mystery. Go to galleries and click on "Upload". You get the upload form, of course. You also download something that is just over half a meg! Go to a previously uploaded image in your gallery and click on "Edit". You get the upload form to edit, of course. You also download something that is just over half a meg! Every time a person reaches that upload form, they're making a pretty hefty download. OF WHAT?? There is nothing on the form that gives a clue, and I've combed through my cache trying to figure it out but haven't found it or just don't know what I'd be looking for. Before anyone gets worried, this has been like this for a long while. Many months, maybe a year or more. Whatever is being transfered is completely benign. However, it makes the process of uploading or editing a gallery image slower, and persons on dialup would feel it most especially. On the R'osity side, it's a bandwidth sucker. How many images are uploaded or edited each day? How many edits are RE-edited twice or more in any given day? Multiply the number by .671 kb and wince! What is this mystery download that's sucking so much bandwidth and not leaving a trace of itself?

And does it take up valuable hard drive space on my pc?

Online Now!

Well, the form itself is about 500K in size - this is due mainly to the image credits dropdowns as the entire content of each dropdown is repeated several (8) times and the cumulative effect takes up about 460K of the page source... If there were more merchants, it'd be worse, I guess. Might be nice if the image credits were done another way, or were optional...

I have never in all my times encountered that. I click on the upload link, the page loads, and my little cable modem light, and my Zone Alarm, and my "Local area Network staus" all agree...NOTHING else is happening, no mysterious traffic. I believe you may need to run some scans on your PC (anti-virus, anti spyware, purge your cache, etc.) "I've combed through my cache trying to figure it out but haven't found it"......Then how do you know it's 500Kb?.... Ah, thanks for noticing that, Kurt. That definitely explains it! AS, I use Opera as my browser, and it shows me - as the page is loading - how many images are on a page, how many bytes/kb are coming in, and other info.

Hey, that's cool. I saved the upload page myself, and looked at its total KB on my hard drive. Quite large... AS

If it weren't for those meddlin' kids...

I guess it already occurred to you guys that if you cut out the bloat on that page so it's down to a reasonable size (25 KB), you're gonna loosen up 1 T1 line, if they are uploading their images at the usual rate. Then you could redirect $500 - $1,000 per month to something more profitable.
