Mine is 42 gig. Yes, gig. That doesn't include my own work files for clothing and objects that I keep. That's another 4 or 5 gig. And it doesn't include all those texture files I use but aren't part of my runtime, another 3 gig. The total is pushing 50 gig. So I'm a junkie. I never delete anything. I don't even know what half of the stuff is. Thank the goddess for big hard drives. But I'm keeping it ALL. MWHAAAAHHAAAAAHHAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!! pdxjims posted Tue, 04 May 2004 at 8:31 PM

OK, so I admit it. I've got a 120 gig and a 160 gig drive. Poser is on the 120, work files and uh, other things are on the 160. I am planning on pruning my runtime though. I got a DVD R/W not long ago, and I'm going to back a lot of old stuff onto it. And I didn't count my P4 installation... Geeze, it's probably 10 to 12 gig.

Lyrra posted Tue, 04 May 2004 at 8:32 PM

p4 - 21.5 gigs p5 - 2.03 gigs Not counting my Images folder, Characters in Progress folder, and Working Products folder which add another 10 gigs or so ..not counting the PoserWorldProduct folder which is at 2.5 gigs right now .... just wrapped up another huge product there and will burn it off to CD tonight. I have a 120 gig HD devoted to graphics. Games? who has time to play games? Lyrra

OMG you people are insane! LOL! My Runtime is 3.75 GB and I think that is way too large! I'm constantly pruning stuff out of it too because you have to come to a point where it's impossible to know what resources you have available and it's just wasting disk space.

Admittedly it's easier to maintain such a small Runtime when all you do are pinup renders and nudes:

V3 - check
Lingerie - check
Props for ambiance - check

Good to go! :)

OK, now how many of you are padding your Runtime with BUM files? They don't count you know. I once found 20+Gig of them buggers on my HD so I now only make them when I need them then throw them out. Got a 26.7Giger here (with No BUM nor PZ3s included)

Here's my nominee for the *smallest* working runtime (& I'm not talking about an "extra" used to zip up freebies/products :-) Since all I use Poser 4 these days is to test my freebies, I use a stripped down runtime with all the defaults removed except for a few textures, Posette & Dork, & whatever my current project is.

FishNose posted Wed, 05 May 2004 at 4:34 AM

Okay so pdxjims beats me on size - but file count? No, never! If you're a junkie, you're a junkie. No PZ3's, no zips - only pure Runtime. Poser with all its stuff occupies about 210 GB on my harddisks (total capacity on 5 disks is over 900 GB). Plus all the backups on DVD of course. :] Fish

No scene files, no modded textures (-that- would add another 8 gig or so), and the only bum files are those that came with P4; the rest were converted over time to jpeg. Mine is at 1.26, and I thought that was way to much and can get confusing, that I have deleted some files (Obj files, stuff in libraries, and also including with the texture folders) that I do not need. Now I have seen big time Runtime folders in here (Amazing). Wondering how in the world can they keep track of everything in Poser?. Now, just imagine when everyone here and even myself, need to reinstall everything...hehe..that is the painfull part.

SpottedKitty posted Wed, 05 May 2004 at 1:22 PM

Oog. I know exactly how big my runtime is, last week I had to move Poser from my 10GB D: drive to my 40GB C: drive -- the free space kept falling below 500MB, and I was running out of other odds and ends to shift off my two year old never-fill-that-in-a-million-years 10GB drive... I also know now how just long it takes to copy 7.5GB from one drive to another. Never mind my 2GB archive of .pz3 files, that was already on the C: drive.

Some of you appear to be using Disk Compression and some not.

For those that are not, why not?

For those that are, ever have any difficulties?

(Posted as a separate question linked above, but this thread is what started me wondering).

igohigh posted Wed, 05 May 2004 at 8:07 PM

Nance; main reason for not using disk compression is performance. It slows down the whole system (regardless of what MicroMonkies might say), every time you call a compressed file it has to be uncompressed to work with it then recompressed when your done with it. On top of slow down there are also resources involved in the decompression/re-compression. Also take note that HD space limits do calculate the "used space" based on Non-compressed data, not on the compressed status. Say a user has a file restriction of 50Meg on a hard drive; that is 50Meg Un-compressed, not 50Meg after compression (talking Windows here, don't know MAC) IMO, it's ok for standard office jocky machines but not sutable for any machine that needs power and speed. On the other hand, with some of the more powerful machines today, loaded with memory and plenty of disk space then it may not (in most cases) cause much issues.

mondoxjake posted Wed, 05 May 2004 at 8:26 PM

The real story at this point...but changes on a constant rotation. At this point I try to delete seldom used items b4 adding new ones.

dlk30341 posted Wed, 05 May 2004 at 8:45 PM

I've only disk compression 1x on my old machine & programs came to a screaching halt, so to speak. When I got my new system, actually as of 2 systems ago, the guys that build my puters say it's not good to compress...so I haven't. Just got a bigger HD & use my space wisely. I'm now up to 3 HD's all 2 120's & 1 200. Just my experience. On my main HD I ALWAYS keep 1/2 of the drive space free, and I do mean always. I check space weekly & move/delete/backup as necessary. I've never had a problem operating this way. ~Knocking on wood now~ I actually have my Poser & Vue folders backed up twice, 1 backup on each HD.

Dale B posted Wed, 05 May 2004 at 9:52 PM

compiler; Want to speed up P5 launch? Create a folder called 'null runtime', put =nothing= into it, and link it into P5. Get in the habit of switching to that runtime whenever you quit P5, and your startup should get a lot faster. Like about 14-30 seconds, depending on your system (I get a click to workspace in about 15 seconds with an Athlon 64 3000+ and 1.5 gigs of ram). It does work, and P5 doesn't mind there not being any content in there...or even a library structure.
