Hey all, I need some help identifying a flower in my garden. And, no, I didn't even think to try to get a picture of it....duh! Anyway, it's a neat flower but I've never seen one like it. Last year I sowed a packet of wildflower seeds and some are blooming the first time this year. This thing is about 18" tall with a cluster of flowers at the top. This one is a dark purple and another that hasn't opened yet looks like it's going to be white. The flowers are huge, about the size of a tulip and are bell shaped. There's about 15 blooms in the cluster at the top of the spike. I've been searching the internet but so far haven't found anything that looks like this thing. Does anyone have any ideas? Lol, I want to see a picture of it! Sounds like a really neat looking flower. I only know the basics, tulips, daffodils etc so I can't help.

Snakes head fritillary? Don`t think this is it but it will eliminate one suspect. We really need a mug shot for an arrest. :o)

oops - just noticed that you said 18 inches - hollyhocks are 6ft tall.

No, it's not any of those. :o) Altho that snake's head thing is pretty cool. The closest I've been able to find in shape and color is the thing. It's a Campanula Sarastro and looks much like it except they're more cuplike than these (these look too long and skinny). The growth pattern is also all wrong. Take the hollyhock blooms above and turn them up like cups and that's about it.

Could it be a Bearded Iris ?

LOL! You all are silly! No, it's not an iris. Have thousands of them on the place. Definitely not an iris. I took some pictures with the cheesey digital camera that came with my computer that gives really crappy pictures. Now if I can just find the USB cable, I'll see if they're decent enough to get the point across. Stay tuned! :o)

Interesting chohole! That foxglove looks exactly like the variety that grows wild in the forests of the U.S. West coast. Sometimes it mutates into an all white variety.

Be careful of foxglove if you have pets, it's poisioness, digitalis is made from foxglove.....

Another suggestion. Do a google for Platycodon. Chinese bell flower.

Check monkshood or wolf's bane at http://www.blossomfarm.com/plants_ac-an.htm or harebell at http://www.prairiefrontier.com/pages/natvpics/nativea4.html Since you used wildflower seeds, I think that harebell (a species of campanula) might be the plant. Only, it's not exactly purple. Monkshood is much darker, but ... Have you noticed itching after handling the plant? Monkshood is poisonous.
