Subject: Anomalies in Freestuff Download Numbers

jwhitham ( ) posted Sat, 22 May 2004 at 5:26 PM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 6:37 AM

OK, there's some odd stuff goes on with people clicking freebie links; take for example the fact that the link immediately preceding my, very nice, Calico M-950 model in Poser Freestuff, has been unavailable since a few minutes after it appeared due to the linked site having broken Angelfire's ToS, and yet it has twice as many downloads as my (click here to download) model. Not that I'm at all sore about that of course.

I do find it strange though, that some accessories for the Anime Doll - not stuff that usually gets into astronomical download figures - can outdo freebies from the likes of PhilC, by a 4:1 ratio, within minutes of appearing in freestuff. Does anyone else have any idea why that should be?

John

If someone updates the url on their freestuff item, it goes back into freestuff pending with the number of downloads still showing.

Then, when it is approved again, it will still show the total amount of downloads.

An item with a lot of downloads could well be an updated file which was originally posted over a year ago.

Each time the download button is clicked, the counter will record even if the download did not work.

If you find a download which is unavailable, please let me know and I can take it out of freestuff and get it sorted.

Shoshanna.

Wow, that was quick! I've actually found a few permanantly broken links recently, it'll need a bit of reseach to find them again and then I'll let you have them.

I think there should be an easy way to report broken links though, they don't matter to me on my cable connection, but they cost people on dialup!

PS Edited this just to include a crriage return, coz I love the new edit feature. Obviously that should read "carriage" return.

All my Renderosity freestuff link to the freestuff page on my site. Either the main freestuff page or the freestuff archive. Once there the person is presented with a vast treasure trove of freebies. Its unlikely that they would return to the Renderosity pages just to click on the next link. Also if someone clicks on a Renderosity link and the file fails to download, they will naturally click again. This will result in additional counts. I view the tally as an indication that folks are seeing the item but not much more than that.

Edited for no other reason than because I now can :))
