It might help to address the 'oversmoothing' problem first as whatever the quality of the texture this will always show through... See where all the right-angle sharp edges look messed up in Poser? That's because Poser expects nice organic curvey meshes. To fix this, either add a 'bevel' to each straight edge in Max, or 'split vertices' in UV Mapper... I take it you are using Steve Cox's UVMapper, right?

I agree with hogwarden, a bit of vertex splitting would improve the rendering no end, and UVMapper Pro would probably do a better job of that. I can do that, and UV map it for you, but I'm not the best person to make a texture map. PM me if you want me to take a look at it.

There's a setting on import, 'weld identical vertices'..helps, but I've been there meself..
