I want to download some objects and models for Bryce 5 but I can't figure out how to convert .3ds and DXF files to something Bryce understands! I've only been at Bryce for a month or so, so you can call me a newb.

Bryce understands the following formats: .3ds, .t3d, .3mf, .b3d, .dem, .dxf, .hf, .lwo, .lws, .pgm, .cob, .ddf, .wrl, .vsa, and .obj. I think it reads some others too. Or you can just download objects and materials made in bryce.

Go to the 'File' menu, skip down to 'Import object', a popup with your files should show up, browse to where you saved your downloaded objects, select either the 3ds or dxf and hit 'Open', Bryce will spend a little time getting things in order and then it should show up in your workspace. Note: some objects may need some smoothing, if that's the case, select the 'E' from the little menu to the right of the object and hit the smooth sphere once, that's usually enough...give your object a material or texture and then render.

In my importing experience, Bryce will not import lwo or lws,(lightwave), files newer than version 5 or maybe even version 5.5 of Lightwave without giving an 'unknown error' message. If someone knows differently, please correct me.

Have a curious question..it doesn't accept anything made in stuido max? .max is the extension?
Zhann posted Thu, 17 June 2004 at 12:29 AM
Nope, Bryce does not accept studio max files, .max models will not import, unless changed to another importable format.

Sometimes when you import an obj. ...for instance a Poser figure or one with texture maps Bryce will have a pop up asking you to locate the source of the texture. You should have it in the same folder as the object in an image folder.

Nitpick: you don't have to have the textures in the same folder. It's just easier, cause you don't have to click all the way to the folder where the textures are.
