The very long established British photographic magazine, Amateur Photographer, is giving away the GNU Image Manipulation Program this week. A cover CD with Windows and Mac OS/X versions, issue date 15th June 2004. Has GTK+2 for Windows machines, and Apple X11 for the Mac, needed for GIMP to run, plus a couple of tutorials (one on the basics, one on converting colour to B+W). May work with Win9x, but developer support has ceased. It is one of the better installation programs that I've seen.

Just in my last photo I say I used GIMP, Linux version. I don't know how it works with other operating systems, but with linux it works perfect.

The Windows version seems to work fine, but there's one problem under Win98. The MS Serif and MS Sans Serif fonts, two of the non-Truetype system fonts, are apparently buggy. I was able to Google for the files and download later versions, though this may not be strictly legal. Even so, it's an impressive product. Testing continues. Although there are UI choices which clash with my habits from other programs.
