So, what do we think about the DAZ announcement that they purchased Bryce?

The DAZ announcement is not that they are reselling Bryce for Corel, they own it now. DAZ bought it lock stock and barrel. DAZ has also release a plugin which works with their development of DAZ Studio. I'll be testing all this over the weekend.

This is actually very good news IMHO. EricofSD Senior Technical Editor The Renderosity Interactive Magazine

why is it my heart sinks at daz's purchase?

Could be better than nothing; it will take many versions to implement all the wishes people made during the years; the good thing that they are asking us what to do and also contacting Kai@Wenger but only time will tell if DAZ succeed with the task.

AgentSmith posted Sat, 26 June 2004 at 10:11 AM

I am confident it will turn out to be THE news we Bryce users have been waiting for all these years. I believe DAZ will be a great home for a great program. Some statements (in context) made by DAZ themself; *DAZ|Studio and Bryce will not be merged into one program. *Bryce will be multilanguage again *Support for Mac will be back on. ---------- From Bryan Brandenburg, DAZ Officer; "We are not going to turn Bryce into Poser or DAZ|Studio. We are going to develop a stand-alone version of Bryce 6 or Super Bryce and will probably do so working closely with some of the original creators of Bryce who we will be meeting with in Europe next month for extended discussions. We have released an import utility within a week of owning the program and have already figured out how to increase render speeds, and not just a little." ---------- Did ya catch that last part? "have already figured out how to increase render speeds, and not just a little" (color me pretty freaking happy) AgentSmith

Can't I color you pink AS? 8P Yup I read what Bryan had to say too and it gave me that happy feeling all over again. I don't think they will destroy our beloved program and I really like the last part of the sentence, even if that was all they did with it I'd be over the moon. 8) Catlin

great, if they can get rid of Vicky's 'blank eyeball' import problem, we got it made..;) I'm just happy they're at a place which will actually support and enhance Bryce..if you want the dissenting view, stop by the Poser forum..they're handing out placards saying 'the end of the world is nigh'..;)

Hang on! They're gonna speed up the render times? Jeez I'm never gonna get through that pile of paper-backs I've been reading while waiting for a render to finish!

All I want from DAZ is to be able to get my Poser animations into Bryce. Still figures have always been able to import into Bryce without any plug ins.

AgentSmith posted Sat, 26 June 2004 at 1:03 PM

I'll bet DAZ will do that. (animations)

123mez posted Sat, 26 June 2004 at 1:46 PM

I must say, I breathed a little bit easier when I found out DAZ had bought Bryce. I was starting to worry that Bryce was going to disappear. I like the idea of an easier way to import into Bryce. Is this only limited to DAZ/studio, or can you also import from poser? Also I was wondering if you can get this in a box version, or is it just a download?
I was thinking of buying another version of Bryce. Now I don't have to worry about support, one thing I didn't think too much of with Corel. I think DAZ will do good with this purchase.

AgentSmith posted Sat, 26 June 2004 at 2:26 PM

Right now, you have to go from Poser to Daz Studio to Bryce. I had read (at the DAZ forums) where DAZ had contacted Curious Labs with the specifics on what Poser needs to include with it's .mtl files for Bryce to better understand the obj export/import. I've still seen boxed versions Of Bryce 5 at a certain chain of electronic/computers stores. But, at this time, from DAZ, you can only get the download. AgentSmith

Yeah AgentSmith, that last feature came blasting through here. I'm tickled pink that someone has picked up Bryce and I certainly be waiting for that Bryce 6 release. Gosh, I actually said Bryce 6! Bryce 6...there, I said it again!

bikermouse posted Sat, 26 June 2004 at 3:17 PM

AgentSmith, I always figured that renderspeeds could be increased in Bryce by a factor of 256 if not 65535. I remember having a conversation with Clay about it; but as I recall it would be better not to dwell on that. Anyrate a faster render is just what we all wanted I'm sure! good news! - TJ

AS,any news on the mac thing, besides just renewed support?Like the plugin or anything?

AgentSmith, what thread is the quote by Bryan Brandenburg from? I've looked over at DAZ and can't seem to find it.

"I had read (at the DAZ forums) where DAZ had contacted Curious Labs with the specifics on what Poser needs to include with it's .mtl files for Bryce to better understand the obj export/import." Transparency. Bump. Proper ambience instead of killing everything in that channel. Proper specularity instead of putting the spec value to 100. Wheeee... so much.* But I don't know whether OBJ/MTL can support all that at all. BTW, anybody tried exporting/importing a 3DS from Poser? The UV texture always has a visible white line at the seams. * OTOH, when I import a model I coloured and specularised in Rhino, I get spec values of several tens of thousands, like 32569.

The Turbo Plugin for Bryce, as DAZ States; "This product is not yet available for the MAC OS" Not yet, usually means a future yes. And, I would assume so since they will be supporting Mac anyway. ----- Yeah, I have seen imported meshes sometimes have crazy high values in the tens of thousands, lol. Makes no difference, only the bump value can actuall go higher than 100. AgentSmith

Well, I have the turbo and studio installed. Seems that an export is very long indeed when there is a high poly count (mil dragon/v3). Also, I'm not getting transmaps. They still have to be manually done. Anyone else having these experiences?
