Subject: Regarding Converting a bum to a jpg.

It strips the blue channel, offsets the red and green channels, and then changes it to a bmp format, then saves the resulting file with the bum extension. I don't think it's an algorithm so much as it's more or less a script.

Yes. (See attached link.) It's not really reversable, though. What you can do, though, is change the extension from .bum to .bmp, open it in Photoshop (or whatever you use) and make it a greyscale image and tweak it. Sometimes this works very well, sometimes it's less than optimal. bonni

The moral to merchants is always supply the .jpg as well as the .bum file. Many are good at doing this.

It is SOMEWHAT reversible, but with losses. In freestuff, for PC, search for Anthony Appleyard's Imagedit program, which will un-bumpmap bums. For Mac, the program SpeedBump, also in freestuff here, is supposed to do it. (For the longest time, Mac's had a way to unbump and PC didn't. Mac guys, enjoy that. ;) )
