As a n00b most of Poser is mystifying me right now, so I'm taking it one thing at a time. Maybe I shouldn't be trying to go for hair-from-scratch so soon? It's driving me nuts.

I agree, creating hair in Poser 5 can be frustrating but here's a pretty good tutorial that should help you out a bit.

That is a great tutorial to start with. English is not my language, otherwise I myself would write a tutorial on this topic. All a can say is; take a look at the "Hair Style Tool", especially "Move" and "Falloff".
