Hi,
I have been been posting a few freebies and giving users the option of d/l a series of small files, instead just one large one, to make it easier members on dial up internet access to d/l. However this doubles the ammount of disk space usage on my server and also is more work for me to create the extra files. The very limited info I have, from my server stats, would indicate people tend to d/l the bigger files, up to 18MB so far. I was wondering if anybody would have any stats on Internet access connection speeds for Renderosity members.
Thank you.
Richard Taylor
PS: I am on cable.

Hi Richard, I can't give you any info regarding the distribution of connection speeds for members here. But I use a dial-up connection and have an opinion about the bigger versus smaller files issue. Since you have your files posted at your own website, I can use something like GetRight download manager which will let me resume an interrupted download where it left off. So I would rather have just the one large file rather than multiple smaller files. I do get a little nervous about a large download using the Internet Explorer downloader (which is what gets used by default for most downloads in the free section). Though it happens very, very rarely, a download can end prematurely and then you have to do it all over again since the IE downloader doesn't pick up where it left off. just my 2 cents...thanks for being interested!! jen

If you segment the files using mastersplitter or stuffit archives, they are not gonna be larger than the whole file was. But some segmenters and encoders will increase apparent size, so check with the experts.

It is reported that over 70% of our member base are using some sort of high speed connection. DSL, Cable, ISDN or T1+ connections. FYI, Clint

Hmmmm. Jen thanks for the response, I will put a reference to GetRight on the d/l pages, it's been quite a while since I have used it but my son uses it for some of his large (up to ~2GB) game demo downloads! Clint I will keep on looking after that 30% that is not on a fast connection so I will keep posting both the larger and smaller untill I run short of disk space and then I will cull the smaller files and the ones that are not being d/l any more. Thanks very much for the responses. Richard

I have dial up, and it's so slow I've given up entirely on downloading anything over a meg unless it's damned important.

I'll see what I can do to keep the files around 1Meg or so however it is not always possible.
